India, US working together on Maldives: Nuland

WASHINGTON: Welcoming efforts of "all sides" to find a peaceful way forward in Maldives, US has said it was working closely with India in resolving the political impasse in the island nation.

"We welcome the efforts that all sides appear to be making to find a peaceful way forward," State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters at her daily news conference.

"We also welcome the ongoing dialogue among Maldivians regarding the role of a unity government in addressing these issues and possibly creating the conditions for early elections. We're continuing to urge all parties to work together to find a way through this," she said.

Nuland said US has been closely coordinating with India, which has "traditionally played a strong role".

"Our understanding is that we are pretty well in lockstep with India in terms of calling for unity and calling for a democratic, peaceful path forward," she said.

Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Robert Blake and his Indian counterpart were working very closely together on these issues, she said.

Blake had recently travelled to Maldives to take stock of the situation.

India should station its Military in Maldives with a Forward Base in the name of fighting piracy.

It would make Maldives forever under our influence.

And also no coups in future and the Wahabis can be sent packing back to Saudi Arabia.

Maldives is a lost case, most of the population is highly conservative the former president was a much looser person.

You intend on sending the entire population to Saudi Arabia then.

It will be wrong to say all maldives citizen are islamist radical, why is there so much support for the elected ex president then?
Even the military and police cant touch him now.
In any case it is power struggle between two groups not islamist vs others.

I'm am no branding all the citizens of it as extremists, however Maldives is a very conservative society on par with Saudi Arabia. yes he does have support however president of Maldives has to follow Islamic law as model the ex president is certainly a Liberal.
It's rather an example.

Well that news was regarding military having a disproportionately large role(than it should have).
Nothing to do with extremism.
Why would so many western tourists go there if the country turning into islamism.
This is just personal power struggle and in small countries, it is not unusual to use armed forces/police to settle scores against your political opponent.
