India, US plan to join hands to counter Chinese influence in Africa

NEW DELHI: As China sweeps through Africa with an insatiable appetite for resources, India and US plan to join forces in that continent to offer what they believe is a credible alternative.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Barack Obama are expected to announce new pilot projects in African countries that will utilise Indian and US expertise together. While these are likely to be training projects, they plan to bring together India's capacities and experience and US' deeper pockets.

The idea was born as a spinoff of an India-US dialogue on agriculture. Significantly, India and the US have also been discussing agriculture as the basis for working together in Afghanistan.

India has even been approached by Japan to examine the prospect of joint activities in Africa.

In Africa, though, India wants to retain the equity and systems it has built up over the years. Besides, India wants African countries to have a greater say in the kind of projects they want and the quality of local content. That's how India has been functioning in Africa for all these years, and believes it has built a lot of equity. India would be loath to lose that. Therefore, in any cooperation with the US, India would fight to keep its processes and its systems intact.

Nevertheless, sources in the Indian government say there are lots of things India cannot do and the US would be able to bring in singular expertise.

For the US, it can create developmental equity in Africa by partnering a developing country with which it has the greatest affinity.

But these projects, say sources, is one of the ways India and the US will develop the habit of working together. Besides, it would give both countries a way of effectively countering the Chinese juggernaut sweeping through Africa.

There is not single US base inside Indian territory how can you say that? :)

Its a collaboration and you need to understand that. India and US will work jointly in Africa.

Just reading this deluge of Indian ambitions is giving me a nose bleed - Confront China in Asia, Confront China in Afria, India in Central Asia, phew - Maybe India can begin by stopping CHinese influence in Sub-continet, in Pakistan, in Bangla, in Lanka, in Nepal?

Leave Pakistan(as India and Pakistan are enemies) out..Chinese influence is being countered in rest of them.

Yesterday we marked the 60th anniversary of our intervention in the Korean War. In that war, we forced the America to sign the ceasefire without winning for the first time in their history.

48 years ago, we had a brief war with India, we conquered all your troops on the way leading up to your capital within days.

:smokin: learn history, don't repeat mistakes. your poor people can't afford it.

If that's indeed the case why does the "Communist Part of China" not simply take Arunachal Pradesh instead of sending trolls to vomit all over the internet about the supreme Chinese power?

I'll tell you why. They are scared of the bloody nose they will get if they try such a thing. For all your pretence about your 'power' and India's 'inferiority', you haven't had the guts to wrest it, all your country can do is publish maps falsely showing it as Chinese territory.

This isn't 1962 anymore. We are not a foolish, naive pacifist nation anymore. Your communist leaders have understood that, high time trolls like you understand it thoroughly.

I wish that rang true, but not all Indians live in the US, how many of those who actually live in India and are connected to Asia actually want this confrontation business? I would guess, not many.

Be reasonable, is there any part of the world, well actually there is, Europe and US and latin America, where Indians don't want to confront others - what up vid dat? what are trying to compensate for?

be reasonable, China is your Asian neighbor, Pakistan, Bangla, Lanka and Nepal are your neighbors - and it's not enough for you that seek to scare them and convince them that one India is a mortal danger to them??

Americans will leave, they always must, Asia is not their home and they are aliens everywhere, do you really want to left holding the bag so to speak?

Actually, a lot of people feel that China is a mortal danger to the world. And Chinese trolls like "Peaceful" (what a misnomer of a name) ought to get that fact knocked in. My comment was a response to his constant empty bragging about taking Arunachal, which they don't have to guts or the ability to take anyway. Some trolls still live in the 60s.

Coming to confrontation - I'd like to know where there is any 'confrontation' that Indians are planning? It is only Pakistan and to some extent China, that keep harping on Indian confrontationism!

The article talks about countering Chinese influence, not confrontation. And that is very very necessary in any case.
