The CPIM-led Left Front in India's Tripura held demonstrations across the state on Saturday against President Barack Obama’s visit as the chief guest at the country's Republic Day parade this year.
The Left fears the invitation to Obama would pave the way for US domination in economic, nuclear and defense ties with India.
The protesters chanted anti-US slogans, alleging the US was exporting terror across the world, and that Northeast India was in grips of an insurgency because of CIA machination.
“We have seen that throughout the world - in Asia, Africa, Latin, Iraq, Afghanistan and even in Syria - they are directly involved in attacking people. They help Israel attack Palestine and murder innocent people, children, old people and women. The leader of these murderers, Barak Obama, has been invited as the chief guest at our Republic Day parade. The Left Front is against this,” said Subasis Ganguli, a protester.
“We do not want a chief of any imperialistic nation to be the chief guest in our Republic Day parade.”
The Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) had strongly opposed a 2008 landmark civil nuclear agreement between the two countries.
They oppose any change in an Indian liability clause that has kept US companies from capitalizing on the deal.
The protesters passed through the streets of state capital Agartala with anti-US placards and posters, and later held a rally.
