India will turn down UK aid on its own, says Pranab
With the United Kingdom deciding to review its aid programme to developing countries, India on Tuesday made it clear that it would prefer to voluntarily turn down the assistance if London decides to discontinue it. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said Delhi has already made its position clear to the UK.
He said when PM David Cameron recently visited India, the government had broached the topic with him. “We made it quite clear that before UK decides to discontinue the aid, they should keep us informed; we would voluntarily suggest to them that we do not require it,” he told the Rajya Sabha. In the wake of reports about misuse of funds extended by Britain, Mukherjee said there are mechanisms in place to deal with such complaints.
