i didn't read lot of comments above and almost missed this. & pardon me for choice of words but this is almost hilarious. my first thoughts were that the oldman is girl's father waiting for what we call in hindu weddings as Kanyadaan (giving the girl to her husband).
feel kind of sorry for the bride though, even with her born in poverty, this isn't the future she deserves.

The amount of jokes that this spawned in the media, talk-shows and daily discourse is unbelievable.

Not that I know of. It could be done at a much smaller scale than in India, starting with maybe ToT. We could definitely start by importing the bogies (or components thereof) from India or China - making the carriages is rather simple in comparison.

But Saidpur's placement as a location may not be ideal if we want to export these items in addition to using them locally. Factory should ideally be in Mongla or Chittagong Port.

Yes,you can.But isn't upgrading BR's infrastructure to allow higher speeds a more pressing need ?In my opinion,FIAT/SIG bogie is bit of an overkill for BR

All LHB did in your case was license the design of the modern high speed bogies and have specialized forging machines to hot-forge the lightweight wheels from special alloys. Making the body is simple - TIG-weld the aluminium superstructure on top of a rigid steel base. And use modern extruded hot-rolled steel sections instead of angle-iron like in the old coaches.

So TIG-welders and hot-forging machines are high tech now? This is news to me.

I was talking about the cost of setting up a coach factory in particular-since you were talking about approach world bank for funds.The figure I quoted was the project cost of a new rail coach factory in Raebareli ( $ 400 million ),which produces LHB coaches.BTW that one has an automated bogie frame fabrication line,utilizing welding robots working in tandem with AGVs

Also,BD would end up importing a large number of components and sub-systems, due to lack of a developed vendor base.

Bangladesh may not have specialized machinery for niche projects (such as aircraft engines or power generation plants etc.). But that is a niche industry in India as well.

Considering the scale of operations of such companies,I guess they are much much more than niche industries.Wouldn't say that about aero engine manufacturing-though it is sufficient to meet the needs of our Air Force.

The problem is where they start cutting corners in typical Bhartiya Ishtyle like including refurbished or sub-par items etc

Since 2009, BR's initiative of “Carriage Rehabilitation Project” is aiming to build 60 broad gauge railway carriages from scraps within 2013, Monzur Alam Chowdhury, divisional superintendent (DS) of Saidpur railway workshop said. A private firm has been involved to share the Tk 27.42 crore project. So far the team has already 'rehabilitated' 20 carriages from scraps retrieved from the junk carriages, dumped at the workshop.

They fabricate ships with imported welding machines & we manufacture welding machines also.
But hey its more technology involved in metal fabrication compared to welding machine manufacturing
