India to spend €950 million on missiles for Mirage 2000 : 1/4/2012

I pay my taxes regularly and so do millions of Indians! Then there's corporate tax, sales tax, service tax, Central excise, wealth tax, CENVAT, customs duties, FIIs, exports, and so on! Now that runs into billions upon billions of dollars!! Plenty to go around.

And not that we're not spending on the poor. A lot of schemes are functioning and some are in the pipeline as a result of which India's poverty has declined to 32 per cent in 2009-10 from 37.2 per cent five years ago.

Cheers!
Lol U spent so much time explaining that to a troll????? :hitwall:

.
it may be the excess amount that french asked for mirage upgrade..
that deal was almost off due various people objecting..

i guess India paying now..

.
only 1.83 % of indian GDP was allocated to defence for 2011-2012 which in minuscule compare to what other countries spend

Just thinking in recent years quite a few deals have gone to the French so would the daddy of them all go the Euro way to balance things out? not taking L1 into account but it would bolster our relations with other euro powers.

MOD's decision on MMRCA will go to the L1 for sure (obviously the whole life time of the planes will be considered).

Only, CCS - Cabinet Committed on Security (headed by PM) can change that by keeping in account the strategic maths.

MOD will inform CCS of its L1 decision and CCS would then have to figure out if it worth going to the higher bidder taking into account the strategic point of view.

and if the theory of spreading the eggs is true, this has gone to EF already given the amount of deals french have got. But the premise of this result is questionable. (these calculation will happen in CCS)

Damn one missile cost 1.9 million euro??? AIM-120 costs $700,000 as per wiki. WTF..

Wait for a French/European confirmation, because we often saw Indian media confusing the EURO price with DOLLAR during the Mirage upgrade reports.
When president Sarkozy visited India it was reported that the price for the missiles would be €500 to 700 million Euros! The latter in Dollar would be around $900 000 millions.
US forces paid over $1 million dollar each AIM 120D "flyaway" cost, the real difference is between MICA IR and other SR missiles, which are much cheaper. On the other side it's understandable, because MICA IR is also a BVR missile, just with an IR Seeker.

well mica is a twin version missile (EM & IR ) bvr missiles ,but i beleive india should have opt for meteor missiles but can it be integrated with mirage 2000 needs to be seen .YA mica is too costly

Meteor is not fully developed and not integrated on Mirage 2000, nor is their any interest on the French side to do so. Mirage 2000-5 onwards can carry 4 x MICAs at the fuselage stations, but that might not be possible with Meteor, since it's much longer. That leaves only the wingstations, which mainly will carry fuel tanks or SR missiles, so all in all, that is doubtful.

may be TOT for MICA is on offer... let us see.... it will be very helpful for our own Astra MK2... to get TOT..

Cabinet clears Rs 6,600cr French missile deal

NEW DELHI: India has cleared the Rs 6,600-crore acquisition of 490 French advanced missile systems to arm the Mirage-2000 fighter jets, which are being upgraded under a separate Rs 10,947 crore programme finalized in July, 2010.

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, cleared the contract for the fire-and-forget MICA (interception and aerial combat missiles) with French armament major MBDA on Wednesday.

Sources say another major defence deal, the acquisition of 75 Swiss turbo-prop aircraft to train IAF rookie pilots for over Rs 3,000 crore, is likely to be cleared next week. IAF wants to induct the 75 Pilatus PC-7 basic trainers by 2013-14 since its 114 piston-engine HPT-32 aircraft have been grounded since August, 2009, due to repeated engine failures, leading to training of pilots being truncated.

TOI had earlier reported that all decks had been cleared for the MICA and Pilatus deals, even as the final calculations are underway to select the ``lowest bidder'' between French Rafale and Eurofighter Typhoon for the mega MMRCA (medium multi-role combat aircraft) project to acquire 126 top-notch fighters at a cost likely to touch $20 billion.

The MICA systems will be fitted on IAF's 51 Mirage-2000s, which are to be progressively upgraded with the help of French companies Dassault Aviation (aircraft manufacturer) and Thales (weapons systems integrator).

While the first two fighters have been sent to France for the upgrade, the rest 49 will later be retrofitted with new avionics, radars, mission computers, glass cockpits, helmet-mounted displays, electronic warfare suites, weapon delivery and precision-targeting systems in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.

The overall Mirage upgrade project cost will cross Rs 20,000 crore, and it will take over a decade to be completed. This has led to some criticism that it would probably have been better to go in for new fighters. IAF, however, swears by the Mirage-2000 fighters, which have had an excellent track record with the force.

Down to just 33-34 fighter squadrons (each has 16 to 18 jets) from a `sanctioned strength' of 39.5, IAF is going for a mix of new inductions and upgrades to retain its operational readiness even as it phases out older MiG variants.

For instance, 63 MiG-29s are being upgraded under a $964-million deal inked with Russia in March, 2008. Then, apart from the 126 MMRCA, IAF is also inducting 272 Sukhoi-30MKIs contracted from Russia for around $12 billion. Moreover, the first lot of the around 120 indigenous Tejas Light Combat Aircraft will join IAF from end-2013 onwards.

Besides, India plans to induct 250-300 stealth fifth-generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) co-developed with Russia from 2020 onwards, in what will be its biggest-ever defence project at around $ 35 billion.

New Delhi: India today cleared a €950 million deal to procure 500 air-to-air missiles from a French firm for IAF's Mirage-2000 aircraft fleet.

A Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today cleared the deal to procure 490 MICA missiles manufactured by French firm MBDA, Defence Ministry sources said.

The missiles would be deployed on the 51 Mirage-2000 aircraft, which are already undergoing upgrades at French facilities under a €1.47 billion deal signed earlier this year.

Under the deal, MBDA will invest €315 million back in the Indian defence sector. The Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP) mandates that foreign vendors bagging deals worth over Rs. 300 crore have to invest back at least 30% of the contract's worth into Indian defence, civil aerospace and homeland security sector.

India signed a deal with French companies Thales and Dassault Aviation, which will take ten years to carry out mid-life upgrade of IAF's 51 Mirage-2000 fighters.

Two aircraft have already been flown to France for upgrades and the remaining would be modernised in India at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) facilities in Bangalore.

"The cost of the contract for upgrade of the Mirage 2000 with Thales is €1,470 million while the cost of the contract with HAL is Rs. 2,020 crore [around €340 million]. The upgrade of the aircraft is expected to be completed by mid 2021," Defence Minister AK Antony recently informed Parliament.

Interestingly, still no real confirmation from French sources, especially from the manufacturer itself, but I found this interesting article:

Green light for Indian Mica

After the aircraft, missiles. By signing in July with Thales to retrofit its 51 Mirage 2000H/TH, New Delhi had not ordered weapons to equip these hunters modernized. Indian sources, it was learned yesterday that the Indian Cabinet approved the purchase of just under 500 air-to-air medium-range Mica, for a total estimated at 950 M €...

...To equip its Mirage 2000 Indian modernized, with deliveries to begin in 2014, New Delhi has been equipped with Mica in its infrared and electromagnetic versions, without the division between the two versions is known. The fire of these missiles will be provided by the RDY-3 radar, developed and supplied by Thales. They should also be used with a helmet sight of Israeli origin, a feature for which the mica is planned but has never been "open" for operational use....

Not sure if that is true, but it would be very surprising since it was widely expected that Samtel would provide the HMS via the JV with Thales, just like they did with Nig 29Ks.
