$55 bn to flow into renewable energy in 5 yrs

NEW DELHI: India expects investments of up to $55 billion in the next five years in the renewable energy sector, which would generate 35,000 MW of power, a top official said.

India, one of the leading producers of wind power, is encouraging investment in renewable energy to curb emissions and reduce dependence on oil as the country imports nearly three quarters of the oil it consumes.

“There would be investments to the tune of $55 billion by 2015 in the renewable energy sector which is expected to produce 35 GW of power,” Debashish Majumdar, chairman and managing director, Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) told reporters on the sidelines of a conference.

IREDA, established in 1987, promotes renewable energy and energy conservation projects. It is administered by the ministry of renewable energy (MNRE).

Renewable sources account for about 6,000 MW out of India’s capacity of about 80,000 MW, but the government believes that the country can raise output of renewable energy to 85, 000 in a little over a decade.

New and renewable energy minister Farooq Abdullah said the government is targeting to electrify 10000 remote villages across the country by March 2012. “We will provide electricity to 10,000 villages at the cost of `500 crore the end of the current plan period,” he said at a press conference on the Delhi International Renewable Energy Conference (DIREC).

The minister highlighted the potential of hot springs in Jammu and said the government was considering pilot projects for its development.

DIREC 2010 is a three-day International Renewable Energy Conference beginning from October 27 that will feature more than 9,000 delegates, over 25 speakers and 600 exhibitors from 50 countries. At the conference, several agreements in the field of renewable energy are expected to be signed between Indian and foreign firms.

This should answer some critics who were questioning the amount of money being spent by Reliance Power on non-renewable coal to power its power generation plants.

good news indeed, however keep in mind IREDA is "expecting" outside investments in this sector. This does not equate to govt. spending. The number is probably based on a best case scenario which hardly ever comes true, actual figures will be much lower.

Which means more money for Chinese solar manufacturers (panels, batteries, inverters etc etc)

Are you unhappy that china's getting more money from us ????
or
Do you think the rest of world gets AID or Loans or funds ???? :disagree:

Let me clarify, It doesn't work like that for other countries. We pay for what we get and that too from our pockets ie which we earn.

Agree, but the projections are based on demand and commitment to meet the challenge to increase the renewable energy percentage in the total power output. Electricity is a profitable business and thats the reason why Reliance and Tata power are investing in Power generation.

It is the private sector which is driving the growth in almost all major sectors with help from the govt., ... the govt. needs to make sure there are no hurdles in these investments, even if they are from outside.

The power sector reforms are showing their benefits to rapidly meet the growing demands of power shortage in India. Hope they privatise the national distribution grid as well which would cut down the transmission losses and ensure more reliable power to the remote areas.

Renewable energy does not necessarily mean Solar power always, India is one of the world's largest producer of Wind Power (in fact Fifth largest installed wind power capacity in the whole world). It can also mean generating power from geo-thermal sources (refer to the article).

Top 10 List of Major Solar Panel Domestic Companies (in India). Hope a lot of the domestic market will be sourced from these suppliers. Other public sector companies are also jumping into Solar Panel production in India. It is going to be a "bright" future for Solar Power in India along with other renewable energy sources.

1) Tata BP Solar
2) Moser Baer
3) Solar Semiconductor
4) IndoSolar
5) Topsun Solar
6) Titan Energy
7) PLG Power
8 ) Maharishi Solar
9) Kotak Urja
10)Photon Energy Systems

That is not the point. The country is taking the initiative to grow responsibly.

FYI, Suzlon the Indian company is the 3rd largest wind energy company in the world. They have some of the largest wind farms in the world located in Maharashtra , Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.

thats a big money - but I guess India needs electricity badly so they will invest it :)

Similar is the story across the border, we have to invest like 40 billion dollars to get rid of these electricity crisis for at least 10-15 years

Yes Zaki... Electricity is an absolutely necessary component in your economic infrastructure. Although most of these investments are being made by the private sector and foreign investors, the govt is investing in thermal and hydel power projects along with the national energy grid and distribution, but more needs to be done to drive the economic growth.

I know the situation is worse across the border in the energy sector, especially a couple of my friends always complain about the electricity situation in Karachi and Lahore. Can't blame them. We used to have similar situation in our cities in India back in the old days... things have improved much since then.
