India to Share its Nuclear Technology with Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka government yesterday said that India is likely to share its nuclear technology with Sri Lanka for power generation using thorium as the main source of energy.

According to a local media report, Sri Lanka's Science and Technology Minister Tissa Vitharana has said that he had invited Indian nuclear scientists to conduct a feasibility study on the use of thorium deposits, found in abundance along the Southern costal belt of the country, as a source of nuclear energy for power generation.

"They are prepared to assist us in utilizing thorium as a source of energy for a future nuclear power plant and to share the necessary technology as India has successfully developed the use of thorium for nuclear power generation," Prof. Vitharana had said.

Thorium is considered as a cleaner source of nuclear fuel than uranium and India ha developed the world's first reactor utilizing thorium technology.

Yes buddy India will help Sri Lanka But why are u so critical about India ?
:what:

.
India is a leader in thorium based nuclear reactors, so seeking their help is a logical step.

Lets see how far this goes. Good luck Srilanka.

.
India will never and should help srilanka esp with nuclear tech. This is not some AK47 or few patrol boats just to throw away. This will amount to nuclear proliferation.

There is a limit to placating. If srilanka wants some nuke tech let them invest in universities for couple of decades and learn on their own. Then transfer of non-sensitive techs may not be a problem 'if' they prove trust worthy to the world like India did.

.
Good news for Sri Lanka :)

But is everyone sure, India is going to share nuclear tech with SL?

.
India wouldn't have much trouble setting up nuclear power plant in SL, but some wrinkles needs to be ironed out.

The wrinkles are China, Pakistan ? :)

How will you do that ?

Or is the LTTE/Tamil issue?

actully they are realy tenz by chines involvment in the reagon that's why they are trying to impres and bost interferance in srilanka becaus they know that what they done in past with srilanka and now they want to change srilankn's mind against them but this is an other drama with srilanka by indian's

Srilanka should go directly to China or Russia.. Go directly to the master instead of disciple.

iajdani,

You seem to be well-versed about the level of scientific knowledge in Thorium based reactors in India when compared to China and Russia.

Would it be possible for you to throw in a couple of shreds of evidences as well to backup your claim (that India is a 'disciple' in Thorium based reactors while China/Russia are its masters) so as to let us know that you are not just those types who are addicted to BS'ing ?

:what:

india it self need help in this area than it has to think of proliferation.

What ever india have today is a copy of Pakistani developments or ready made nukes from US.

Lets not hyphenate China and Pakistan, as long as India is around, Pakistan can forget about any meaningful engagements in South Asia. So that's one wrinkle down, one to go.

Furthermore, it makes sense for the Sri Lankans to work with the Chinese. Unlike India, China does not have to worry about any domestic complications when it comes (came) to arming Sri Lanka to fight the LTTE. China also has plenty of money, so in the coming years cooperation between the two will only increase. A prosperous Sri Lanka will be good for Sri Lanka and India.

The Sri Lankans are only looking out for themselves and India is no more than 15 nm away. Aside from economic cooperation, the Chinese can forget about military installations on the island. Geography took care of that 'wrinkle'. The Sri Lankans have nothing to fear from India and hence they have no reason to become a part of any of that.

When it comes to Sri Lanka, simply by virtue of geography (not to mention shared history, culture, etc) India will always be number one.
