It is in early planning stages only - won't be built anytime soon in the near future - right now the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) - a 500MWe thorium based nuclear reactor and the only one of its type operational in the world is the big deal -

Its misreported i think. Tamil Nadu is already producing apprx 22300 MW of electricity against Pakistan's 22700 MW. Also with in next two years number of medium to large power generation capacity will be added.

The southern part of our country is not blessed with large Coal reserves nor has rivers large enough to develop hydel power. Owing to this the grid depends hugely on coal transported from eastern parts of country (States of Jharkhand, Bengal, Orissa, Chhattisgarh) for the Thermal power stations. Considering the requirements, Central government is giving priority to setting up of Nuclear Power plants in the region with prime examples being Kaiga in Karnataka, Kalpakkam in Tamilnadu (2 old and now 1 new FBRin construction) along with 6*1000 MWe Russian PWR (VVER 1000) at Kudankulam in TN. There is also a proposal to set up 1100*6 MWe US Reactors in state of AP (near Vizag).
Tamilnadu is a rapidly developing state with lot of manufacturing industries and hence the state requires quite a large share of power and hence, new projects are coming up.
As i explained above owing to long distance from coal mines (except for Neyveli Lignite mines), it is cost effective to set up NPPs in the region.

Can you teach your country fellow Kinetics to reply in educated manner. Tamil nadu doesnt have 23000 mw production, infact its about to touch 14500mw.
I read the article and asked a question as 500mw is nothing and if someone says,as was written in article, its going to bring relief to some area well...then obviously its going to sound weird. And also the power needs of states could vary depending upon it being an industrial city etc.

India operates a synchronous electricity grid that facilitates inter-regional power transfer all across the country rather the world's largest synchronous electricity grid to be particular - and it does not necessarily mean that electricity is supplied to the same state where the Nuclear Power Plant is located - My state Uttar Pradesh has a nuclear power plant in Narora with 440 MWe but not a single KWe of electricity is supplied to Uttar Ppadesh and all goes to Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. Similar is the case of Tamil Nadu where the 500 MWe won't be supplied to it but to other states as well like in the case of Kudankulam Atomic Power Plant which is also located in TN but only a fraction of it is supplied to TN.

To be precise since we operate a synchronous electricity grid - it hardly matter which states are power surplus or power deficit all will be compensated through the national grid.

This is excellent news, advancement in science is of paramount importance, especially in countries which have a demanding and large population like ours.
