India to Sell Warships to Vietnam, Increase Footprints in South China Sea

India is all set to sell warships to Vietnam - a country locked in territorial with China.

Garden Reach Ship Builders and Engineers or GRSE - a Kolkata-based Defence Public Sector unit - will supply warships to Vietnam. This will be the second export of warships for India. It is already selling a patrol ship - Coast Guard Ship Barracuda - to Mauritius at a cost of Rs. 350 crores. (Meet the Barracuda - the First Warship India Will Export)

Besides, it is also in the race to export two light Frigates - about 3500 tons each at a total cost of Rs. 2000 crore - to The Philippines.

The forays of the Indian Ship builder in the Indian Ocean and the disputed South China Sea are not mere commercial. The sale has strategic implications as well as the exports will spread Indian footprints across the region. Vietnam, the Philippines and four other countries are locked in a high decibel and international watched territorial dispute with China in the South China Sea. India has oil drilling blocks off the Coast of Vietnam and has ramped up military training including that of Submariners and Sukhoi-30 fighter pilots.

"The sale of at least four patrol vessels comes as part of the $100 million credit line for military extended to Vietnam by India," Rear Admiral AK Verma (retd) Chairman and Managing Director of GRSE said.

These patrol vessels will be about 35 meters in length, 10 meters broad and will have specialized Aluminum Hull. They will be used to patrol the waters close to the shore. Vietnam needs at least seven more such ships and GRSE is expected to get the order for the rest of the ships as well.

For the Philippines order, GRSE is competing with six foreign ship yards - Navantia, Spain, STX, France and Hyundai, Daewoo, and STX from Korea.

"We have been looking out to export ships for about a year and half, however under the Modi government there is more urgency and stress on exports," a senior GRSE officer told NDTV explaining fresh forays of the shipyard to foreign shores.

No chance in Philippines. BrahMos and Barak-8 is too costly for thilem.

I don't think they won't be able to afford around 3-4 of them. They aren't that poor, though we could give it to them on preferential terms initially that would favour them to build trust with Indian warship manufacturers.

Definitely, the base structure of the frigate would be Kamotra, and possible for anti-ship role, we cant provide anything below BrahMos, and for AAW role, we cant provide anything below Barak-8. 8 BrahMos with 16 Barak-8 is possible, but the cost is very high for this system. Maybe the final cost skyrocketed to $250mn-$300mn. And nope Philippines not ready to spent that much.

And possible, Indian Navy shows reservation in transferring there front-line weapon system to Philippines.

Be pragmatic, why provoke China? If India keeps arming Vietnam and the Philippines do you know what will happen? Sooner or later that region is going to go "hot" and I for one have no interest in seeing Indian forces go to far in some far away battlefield and dying for some "friendly" nation's interests. India is not the global or even regional policeman.

India needs to look out for its own interests and what interests will it serve to arm Vietnam with such intimidating weaponry? When the US is looking to conduct a Foreign Military Sale they make an assessment on whether selling/transferring that weapon system to the said nation will alter the power balance in the region and destabilise it. I would argue the introduction of the Brahmos in that part of the world is dangerous.

The ONGC exploring Vietnamese oil blocks and being backed up by the IN is one thing but transferring the Brahmos to the Vietnamese is a step too far.

Provoke China? When the china provided nuke and missile to Pak, it didnt provoke India. When China provided F-22P frigate, it didnt provoke India?

When China provided Al-Zarrar and Al-Khalid tank, it didnt provoke India. And latest, when China provided JF-17, it didnt provoke India? What you expect from India? I can tell you if India sit ideal, the China arm every South Asian country against India.

We dont need to worry about it.Because Russians already supplied them with P 800 Oniks.Almost equal.to Brahmos.
