India To Request Javelin Missile Sale | AVIATION WEEK

The U.S. is expected to receive a letter of request from the Indian government for a proposed Foreign Military Sale (FMS) of the Javelin man-portable anti-tank missile system.

Built by a joint venture of Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, the Javelin has been demonstrated to the Indian army and was brought last October to a joint Indo-U.S. training exercise aimed at sharing experience in peacekeeping, humanitarian/disaster relief and counter-insurgency/counter-terrorism operations.

Of nine Javelin firings, three were done by Indian gunners picked at random, and all scored hits, according to Roger Rose, CEO of Lockheed Martin India.

Eventually “there could be hundreds” of Javelins ordered, Rose says, although the initial request is expected to be smaller. The system weighs 22.45 kg. (50 lb.) and is ready to fire in 30 seconds with a reload time of 20 seconds. The missiles have a shelf life of 10 years.

The compact, lightweight medium-range missile system has been used in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq by U.S. and allied soldiers, marines and special operators. Eleven countries have selected Javelin to meet anti-armor requirements.

Javelin is a fire-and-forget missile with lock-on before launch and automatic self-guidance. The system takes a top-attack flight profile against armored vehicles (attacking the top armor which is generally thinner) but can also take a direct-attack mode for use against buildings or fortifications. This missile also has the ability to engage helicopters in the direct attack mode. The missile reaches a peak altitude of 150 m (500 ft) in top-attack mode and 60 m in direct-fire mode. The missile is equipped with an imaging infrared seeker. The tandem warhead is fitted with two shaped charges: a precursor warhead to detonate any explosive reactive armor and a primary warhead to penetrate base armor.

Yeah but Nag has longer range than Javelin. We needed a medium range ATGM I think range of Spike ER is much more than Javelin. We also got Milan and Konkor.

So i guess we will be sealing two deals..JAVELIN and Artillery gun..

looks like nag is not going to be developed to a man portable version anytime soon

.
Just feel that DRDO is loosing out on some Key sales -- NAG could have been modifed to MANPAD version...--- i think there is a serious lack of Vision either at IA side OR DRDO side.

IN is probably the best service when it comes to these...Love the way they are handling things.

Can someone clarify --
What is the status of NAG ?

There were some talks about man portable nag but later the project was dropped and Helina was adopted. We needed a new generation man portable fire-and-forget ATGM so there was competition between Javelin and Spike MR but I somewhere heard that Spike failed in desert tests. So they must be going for Javelin but I personally think we need longer range missile than Javelin like Spike ER/NLOS but ofcourse without any faults.

Many trials were already held in last few months and final trials will be there in this month. After that the army expected to order huge number of Nags.
