The Indian Air Force (IAF) will open a new air base in Rajasthan Tuesday to bridge the “strategic air gap” between three of its forward bases in the state. The new base, the sixth in the state, is nearly 100 km from the international border with Pakistan.

“This airbase will further the strategic gap in air defence in the western sector. The new base is supported with modern infrastructure,” an IAF officer here said.

The new air base at Phalodi is located between Jaisalmer and Jodhpur and will straddle the distance between the two bases. It is ready to undertake all types of operations.

"It will serve fighter aircraft and helicopters. As of now, no squadron has been based at Phalodi," the officer said. Sources, however, maintained that the frontline Sukhoi Su-30MKI combat jets could be deployed at Phalodi.

The IAF chief, Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik, will inaugurate the new air base and witness a flypast by Jaguar, MIG-21 and MIG-29 fighters.

The IAF's other bases in Rajasthan are located at Suratgarh, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and Barmer. The first three are close to the international border with Pakistan and are backed by by the bases at Jodhpur and Barmer.

Fighters like the MiG-21 and the MiG-27 operate from these bases.

Its not Just MKI specific .

IAF has decided MKI as its air-superiority fighter for next 3 decades. So all forward posts and upcoming new posts -will have MKI.

60 new bases are planned , i heard few years back

more bases the better. in a way it does provide a target rich environment for the enemy. it works both ways !! :coffee:

A target rich environment benefits the enemy only if the enemy is able to reach the target without becoming the target.

How exactly do you plan to do that ?

The same way you guys are planning to do our bases. Both countries have the capablity. :smokin:

Was this that difficult to guess for you ?

I think its a good move since PAF is validating landing on motor ways. We have to place more logistical support near border. I would like IAF to have underground air base like we have few up north and on eastern border.

Indian Air Force to operationalise Phalodi airbase today

NEW DELHI: The Indian Air Force (IAF) will operationalise its new airbase today (Tuesday) at Phalodi in the Rajasthan desert at the tri-junction of Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and Bikaner to strengthen the air defence gap in the western sector. Situated 102 kilometres from the international border with Pakistan, the airfield is capable of operating all types of fighter, transport and rotary-wing aircrafts. Air Chief Marshal PV Naik will formally inaugurate the airfield with the landing of the first fighter aircraft and people will also be treated to a fly-past by various fighter formations, including Jaguars. According to IAF sources, the new air base will strengthen the two other bases at Jaisalmer and Jodhpur. The Phalodi base was approved in July 2006, keeping in mind the geo-political scenario and the need for in-built flexibility in operational requirements. It would also have a care and maintenance unit. iftikhar gilani
