Sylhet, Dec 29 (UNB) - Indians have allegedly occupied 32 kilometers of Bangladesh land in border areas of Bianibazar and Zakiganj upazilas of Sylhet district.

Local administration and land settlement officials of the two upazilas and local people said the occupied land has been omitted from the survey list at India’s instigation in order to keep those out of the land settlement survey which is being jointly conducted by Bangladesh and India in the border.

Besides the 32 kilometers of land, they said, another 712 acres of Bangladesh land at Noagaon Mouja of Muria union in Bianibazar upazila was also occupied by the Indians and being used by them for long.

Where is Assam's 190 Bigha Land?

The White Paper on Foreigners¡¯ Issue released by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday has failed to reveal a satisfactory picture of the issue of freeing land possessedby the illegal foreigners in Assam. Though theWhite Paper provides some data on the amount of land possessed by the foreigners and the amount of land subsequently freed by the State government from their possession, it fails to reveal the status of the remaining 190 bigha, 2 katha and 9 lessa of land.
Where has the State¡¯s 190 bigha, 2 katha and 9 lessa of land gone? The Clause 11 of the Assam Accord, 1985 stated: ¡°It will be ensured that the law restricting acquisition ofimmovable property by foreigners in Assam isstrictly enforced.¡± On the basis of the Clause 11 of the Assam Accord, the State government instituted 141 cases against 461foreigners who possessed 661 bigha, 3 katha and 9 lessa of land in different parts of the State, revealed the White Paper on Foreigners¡¯ Issue. ¡°Of 661 bigha, 3 katha and 9 lessa of land possessed by the foreigners, the government managed to free 471 bigha and 1 katha of land,¡± the White Paper stated.
But surprisingly, the White Paper has not revealed anything about the status of the remaining 190 bigha, 2 katha and 9 lessa of land. The Assam Alienation of Land (Regulation) Act, 1980 restricts the acquisition of immovable property by foreigners in Assam. Of the referred cases to the Foreigners Tribunals in the State, the Tribunals declared 61,774 people in the State as foreigners. Now, the question is: Don¡¯t these 61,774 foreigners have immovable properties like land in Assam? The White Paper on Foreigners¡¯ Issue is also silent over this issue.
