India has decided to shift its fencing along with Bangladesh towards the zero line in order to mitigate the problems of Indian villages situated between the fence and the border.
The decision was taken at a meeting held in the Indian home ministry on Tuesday evening with senior officials of five Indian states sharing their border with Bangladesh -- Assam, West Bengal, Tripura, Meghalaya and Mizoram.
The meeting was chaired by Susheel Kumar, Secretary (Border Management). Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi was also present, reports our New Delhi correspondent today.
“In order to mitigate the problem of Indian villages located between fence & border and to enhance security along IBB, it was decided that fence will be shifted towards the zero line to bring Indian villages within the fence,” an official statement said adding the state governments concerned were asked to expedite land acquisition for border infrastructure works.
The meeting reviewed the situation along the border areas in the light of “recent incidents” in Bangladesh and heightened threat perception of infiltration. The statement did not mention the “recent incidents”.
Issues related to cross-border terrorism, non-registration of FIRs in some states, arrest and investigation, charge sheet and conviction in border crimes, problem of forged identity cards, cattle smuggling, cultivation of poppy in bordering areas and fencing were discussed.
A Task Force headed by West Bengal police and with Guwahati Frontier of BSF as its members has been created to strengthen the system to identify the crime syndicate involved in cross-border crimes and to take action against such syndicates. The Task Force will submit its report within one month, said the statement.
Data of apprehension of cross-border criminals being maintained by BSF will be shared with state police of West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya and Mizoram to develop an institutional mechanism for tracking of follow up action on such criminals.
