India will launch the $40 billion second phase of its urban renewal mission in about four months, Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath told delegates attending the World Cities Summit here today.

The Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) phase II would be carried out over the next five years as India works to cover its infrastructure deficit throughout the country and manage massive urbanisation programmes, he told the Summit's opening plenary session.

"The challenge is not only to bridge the deficit but to also to build for the future," Nath said, adding that India has spent close to $15 billion on the first phase of the mission which was launched in December 2005.

The Central Government would use the second JnNURM phase to support infrastructure development in states.

He highlighted water, sewage and transportation among the main challenges for India in building capacities in cities.

Among success achieved to date, he singled out the development of metro systems in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Jaipur.

Nath disclosed that project reports were being finalised on building metro in every city with a population of two million.

"Though only 31 per cent of the India is urbanised, yet we have second largest urban population in the world. As India grows, the growth preceded infrastructure," he said.

Meanwhile, Nath welcomed the nomination of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation for the Lee Kuan Yew City Prize 2012.

"Certainly Indian cities have achieved a lot and certainly the Indian cities will achieve a lot," he said after addressing the plenary session.

"But the scale is so large, we have to endeavour to see many more cities nominated for awards," he told PTI in comments on Ahmedabad being given special mention in the award.

I see squat for $15 billion except for some new buses. But many buggers have sure become rich siphoning off the money!

You blindly can't replace old buses with AC buses. There should be enough demand. JNURM is not limited to metro cities only. It covers all India. And every corner of India are not equal in money power(people's earning). I will give you an example. In my native district Varanasi there was only 1 government bus used to run & that pretty old rake too. But now thanks to JNURM low floor, normal & many other types of buses are running since last 5-6 six years in my district what I remember. Now government should focus on infrastructure part mainly with slight increase in no of fleet of buses with increase in seat capacity. Some buses have pretty low seat capacity I SHAPATH.

Come to big cities you will see 90% AC buses now
Brother in which city do you live, some city of MARS. Even Mumbai is the financial city of India. I don't see more than 10 or 20% buses(AC buses in whole fleet) let alone others. Don't pretend of rich city. It's wrong. Whatever we are,we have earned it. We need to focus on infrastructure first.

Here's more....Is this the end result of the $15 billion that has been spent on JNURM? Just take a look at this crap that runs even today in a metro like Chennai - the capital of Tamil Nadu!!!

So that's the difference between the private sector and the Government! Crores of tax payers money going down the drain with little or nothing to show!

.
In lucknow alone 40 % of the buses operate air conditionet now .
Btw these bus drivers are awfull with their driving skills , and alternate days these drivers usually make into the headlines with the accidents they cause .
Hence i'm the biggest hater of buses in cities

@orion hunter
we have thousands of municiples along with those big cities under urban development department ..so your sweeping statement dont do justice to many hard working souls ..
There are many cities which utilised there funds to optimum .. And there are many bad apples too..if you are expecting govt to function as am efficient company then thats not possible because govt cant function in isolation .. It has to draw people and keep them satisfied logically .. Thats a big ask since corruption is inbuilt with people .. There are many revolutionary ways to plug these leakage and everything will be done in due course of time
