India To Get Over 60 Warships

NEW DELHI: The Indian Navy is strengthening its ties with key maritime nations in the Indian Ocean region and has long-term plans to get over 60 warships in keeping with its emergence as a major power in South Asia.

Admiral Arun Prakash, the Indian Navy chief, on Friday said the role played by his force in mounting relief operations after tsunami had led to greater respect for the nation and a desire among other naval powers to forge closer ties with New Delhi.

"We made a deep impression, much more than we realised, on external observers," Prakash told reporters here ahead of Navy Day Sunday, referring to the relief operations carried out by the Indian Navy in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

The swiftness with which it had mobilised 32 warships, 30 aircraft and over 5,000 personnel for the operations had established the navy as a "powerful instrument of state policy", he remarked.

After having conducted joint exercises during this year with the navies of US, Russia and France, the Indian Navy had signed pacts with Thailand and Indonesia to carry out coordinated patrols in regional waters.

"We also have good ties with the navies of Singapore and Vietnam and are in the process of establishing closer ties with Myanmar and Malaysia," Prakash said.

The navy chief also disclosed that his force had ordered 27 warships ranging from patrol boats to frigates and had "in-principle" clearance from the government for 36 more vessels.

"There is probably no other navy with a shipbuilding programme of such magnitude," he said. These vessels, however, would be just adequate to maintain the navy's current force level of about 130 ships.

Pakistan needs to bost its coastal defenses. Anti-Ship installations would be key, especially when hidden. When the Japanese were trying to land on Shanghai their intelligence didn't know about this hidden gun emplacement. And boy were there consequences! 700 dead! I know China has a Coastal Defense Force, they take care of all the land-based anti-ship missiles, Pakistan needs something like that. Out at sea, missile boats would be key. I say up the production of the Jalalat. Also some more modern frigates. If Pakistan can get AEGIS on the Oliver Perrys later on, then they have a chance. Also the NSSG has to do a good job sabotaging the ports, and hopefully the Indian guerilla groups can do some damage. India will have to fight on 2 fronts.

India unveils naval plans to rule the ocean

NEW DELHI, Dec 2: India announced on Friday ambitious acquisition plans for its navy and said the new military hardware would give it greater clout in the strategic energy corridors of the Indian Ocean.

It also said the Indian navy, besides constructing or buying ships, submarines and aircraft, was also building ties with countries in the region to expand its bluewater reach in the Indian Ocean.

“The Indian Ocean is now the highway along which over a quarter of the world’s trade and energy requirements move,” Indian Navy chief Admiral Arun Prakash told a news conference in New Delhi.

“The Asia-Pacific region holds immense promise for political, economic and military cooperation and the vital role maritime forces play in this regard makes the Indian Navy a key component of the nation’s foreign policy.”

Navy cruising along smoothly

NEW DELHI, DEC 2 : The navy is well on its way to meeting adequate force levels on all aspects, including maritime reconnaissance assets through indigenous means.
“As far as our force level plans are concerned, we have a healthy ship-building plan underway, with the Navy presently having 27 ships and submarines being built in various public sector shipyards while the government has, in principle, accorded approval for a further 36 craft,” navy chief admiral Arun Prakash told the media on the eve of Navy Day.

He, however, denied that this was leading to a large navy, noting most of the ships were replacements for the naval ships being decommissioned.

Referring to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s speech at the annual combined commanders’ conference in October, the naval chief said that currently, the navy’s share of the defence budget is about 17% and we are hoping that it will soon reach 20%. If the budget goes up or our share goes up, we hope to be comfortable as far as our future planning is concerned.”

Dr Manmohan Singh had said that there was a possibility of increasing the defence budget to 3% of the GDP, if the economy continued to grow at an annual rate of 8%.

He said the refurbishment of the acquired Russian aircraft carrier ‘Admiral Gorshkov’ was proceeding well on course, is scheduled to join the navy by 2008.
