What happened to Iron ore mine in Afghanistan ?

What happened to Iron ore mine in Afghanistan ?

Difficult to have a mine in afghanistan under the current situation plus how do you transport the ore from afghanistan to the nearest port or market? To be viable, any ore that can be extracted needs a market and a cost effective route to the market, ie the ore either has to be transported to china or india the only 2 potential markets.

To get the iron ore to india, you either go through pakistan or through iran (and then ship it to india). Pakistan is unlikely to allow the use of its territory for indian owned mines and transporting the ore south through iran, to the port and then shipped to india is not very economical.

Iran has also expressed its readiness in offering a site near its Chabahar port, which can also be used to transport iron ore if a consortium led by SAIL explores iron ore from the Hajigak mines in Afghanistan. The consortium, Afghan Iron and Steel Company (AFISCO) — led by SAIL — has bagged the bids for exploring three iron ore deposits in Hajigak in 2011, which has an estimated reserve of 1.8 billion tonnes of high grade ore.
