India to develop Iranian railways to boost trade
India is exploring avenues to boost trade with Iran by developing its railway network. The project which will connect Iran’s major ports and key production centers is estimated to cost more than 5 billion dollars. Our correspondent in New Delhi has filed this report.
With the easing of western sanctions against Iran, New Delhi is exploring the possibility of helping the country in expanding and modernizing its rail network. India is already engaged in the development and expansion of Iran's Chabahar port.
Analysts say that New Delhi is keen to develop Iran's railway network and is interested in working on long-term projects once the financial terms and investment procedures are finalized. Indian companies and officials have been executing various projects in Iran and have in the past completed signaling projects for some 25 stations on the Shahrood- Mashad section of the Iranian Railways. India can help in supplying long rail tracks and their layout. It has a vast experience in upgrading existing signaling and electrical systems in India and abroad. All project exports in the rail sector are valued at over 5 billion dollars. Additional railway lines in Iran will help in connecting mining and manufacturing sectors to seaports. According to reports, Iran is planning to expand the country’s railway network annually by 500-1,000 km to ensure it touches 25,000 km by 2025 from around 13,000 km at present.
