India to Commission 10 New C-DAC Developed PARAM Yuva II-class Supercomputers by March 2016 #NSM

I laugh because 4 of the majors powers in supercomputing are just trying to reach 1 exa by 2020, but India is going to build one over 100 exa in the same time frame??

if Japan 1 exa is going to consume around 30 megawatts of power than a 100 exa would be well over 30GW
As I said the work has already started my friend and I know about it the link you posted.
Also I know Obama wants to build the fastest supercomputer in USA but he started late many countries started well before America.
If you would ask me 132 exascale will be a too much overkill on scientific technology and it could mean that all other countries from all over the world will have serious repercussions over the program me because of its real size which could light a race among countries which will result in wastage of electricity.
In order to run 132 exascale we require electricity equal to more than 24 mumbai. But let's see how the program me turns out.

correct me if I am wrong but 4,500 crore=$833 million USD right??
According to WIkipedia it costs $2 million/piece.
I think the amt is only for the 1st phase
that cheap or too expensive ?

the mars orbiter was 70 million

Indian HPC Systems are 40% to 50% more cost effective than their US/Western counterparts - a reason why they have been exported to many countries already - Param Yuva II was made by C-DAC in a period of three months, at a cost of INR 16 crore ($2 million). Though it is not likely the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of the supercomputer which includes its supportive infrastructure facilities like to reduce heat, it requires elaborate cooling facilities. $2 million is the cost of the HPC system excluding the cost of the infrastructure facility and HR training.

India will have only PFlop/s HPC System under NSM - The only PFlop/s HPC System commissioned in India till date is IISc's 'SahasraT' which is a Cray XC40 HPC System - the cost of which was INR 82.70 crore ($13 million). India can very well afford to have 73 HPC systems with the sanctioned fund itself which doesn't include the supportive infrastructure facility and HR training which will be provided by the Institution in which C-DAC installs its HPC system.

Any source for this plan...?

India working on building fastest supercomputer

t

this seems like fantasy  130 exaflops in the next 6 or 7 years, lol I would be surprised if we hit 1 exaflop, at best 1 to 20 exaflops by 2022

It was probably misquoted - a misinterpretation.

Same here 1 exaflop is a achievable target for us
A 10 Exaflop target will be highly ambitious & not achievable but a 130 exaflop target is like saying **** you Logic

136 Institutes Linked on Hi-speed Network

BENGALURU: A total of 136 institutions in the state, including major universities and research institutes, have been connected under the Centre’s National Knowledge Network (NKN), envisaged under the National Knowledge Commission.

The extensive Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) network of RailTel Corporation of India (a mini-ratna enterprise), BSNL and Power Grid Corporation of India have been harnessed to put in place this network, which ensures speedier sharing of knowledge.

“RailTel of Karnataka alone has been instrumental in benefiting 53 institutions across the state through its OFCs that has ensured speedier dissemination of knowledge and data,” said G Shantiram, General Manager of RailTel, Karnataka territory.

Institutions in Bengaluru, Hubbali-Dharwad, Belagavi, Chitradurga, Ballari, Haveri and Mysuru have benefited enormously from this hi-speed connectivity, he said.

This has been achieved over a period of five years through lease lines, the GM said.

ISRO headquarters, IISc, National Institute of Fashion Technology, Government Unani Medical College, IIM (all in Bengaluru), Taranath Medical College (Ballari), Regional Medical Research Centre (Belagavi) and BEML (R&D, Bangarpet) figure among the 53 institutes which have been provided hi-speed bandwidth.

The National Informatics Centre based in Koramangala plays the key facilitator by providing secure data-centric services, Shantiram said. P Mohan, coordinator of NKN in Karnataka, said besides 136 institutions, 10 more would soon get the connectivity. Among the prominent beneficiaries are ISRO.

“In Bengaluru alone, we have connected five of the institutions belonging to the organisation by setting up a hi-speed virtual LAN for them,” he said.

Background

The move to create the NKN was initiated by the office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, and the National Knowledge Commission. The first high-level committee meeting for establishing the network was held on May 16, 2008.

The goal behind it is to create quality institutions with a pool of highly trained personnel with the objective of helping R&D in the country in a big way in the future.

risking sounding like an old man, I wonder what would applications of such computing prowess, it's beyond my imagination. It's great what technological feats mere humans are capable of.

India is also making
130 exascale supercomputer at the cost of 2.2 billion Dollar till 2020-21 alwhich will be among the 2 supercomputer which will be build till 2021 the other one will be from a pvt company from USA.
But the difference between both the computers will be the speed.
India will create 130 exascale sulercomputer but the pvt company will make mere 1 exascale supercomputer.

1 exasclae= 1000 petaflops.
The fastest supercomputer currently belongs to China with 54 petaflops.
So you can imagine what a feat India will achieve once done.

India to Install 73 'Green' Supercomputers in Next 3 Years

India plans to install 73 'green supercomputers' in the next three years to enable high-performance computing with reduced power consumption, a scientist at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) said on Friday.

"Around five to 10 supercomputers will be installed this year and the rest in the next three years in phases. Through optimisation, power consumption of the machines will be reduced as less as possible," Sanjay Wandhekar, associate director and head, High Performance Computing, C-DAC, Pune, told IANS.

Currently 11 Indian machines are on the list of the world's 500 most powerful supercomputers, including two in the top 100.

C-DAC, which gave India its first supercomputer, said with the 73 'green' machines, the country would be on the Top 500 Green computing list as well.

The machines are being developed under the Rs. 4,500-crores National Supercomputing Mission which is jointly handled by the departments of science and technology and electronics and information technology.

Wandhekar said 50 machines will be entry-level supercomputers, 20 of medium level and three will be of large capacity.

The Bhaskara supercomputer was announced in May to help meteorologists in conducting research and development related to prediction of weather including effective forecast of tropical cyclone, heavy rainfall and cloud burst events. The present augmentation enables Earth System Science Organisation - National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (ESSO-NCMRWF) to provide high-resolution 10 days global weather forecast and prediction of extreme weather events using very high-resolution regional models with a horizontal resolution of 1.5km and probabilistic forecasts using an ensemble prediction system.
