NEW DELHI: India plans to spend an estimated $100 billion on defence over the next decade to modernize its Soviet-era arsenal and is pushing the Obama administration to ease the acquisition of US weapons and technology, according to a US Newspaper.

“With its growing military footprint, India is steering away from traditional ally Russia, its main weapons supplier, and looking toward the United States to help upgrade its weapons systems and troop gear,” the newspaper reported.

India’s expanding military ambitions, and the US role in selling this nuclear-armed nation more firepower, is starting to worry Pakistan, the report said. India also has ongoing border disputes with another Asian giant, China, which defeated it in a short 1962 war.

“This increase in India’s military spending is seen with rising anxiety here in Pakistan,” said Hasan-Askari Rizvi, a leading defence analyst in Pakistan.

“As long as India builds pressure on Pakistan militarily, Pakistan won’t move troops to fight the Taliban, period. In the future, there could potentially be a situation like the 1965 war between India and Pakistan, where both used American weapons against each other.”

“India is pushing the Obama administration to ease the acquisition of US weapons and technology. Already this year, a high-level US government group cleared the way for Lockheed and Boeing to offer India cutting-edge radar technology for fighter jets. At the US Embassy in New Delhi, defence contractors such as Northrop Grumman are sponsoring little league baseball teams, the companies’ names stitched onto the uniforms.”

About 70 percent of India’s military equipment comes from Russia, said Sitanshu Kar, a spokesman for the Indian Defense Ministry. But some Indian military officials have complained about the quality and cost of Russian equipment and have advocated a shift to US suppliers.

“We’ve had a long-standing relationship with Russia. But that’s changing now,” Kar said.

The country that spawned the Gandhian principles of non-violence now has a shopping list that includes 126 fighter jets, 155mm howitzers, long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft, vast cargo planes used in long-distance conflicts, high-tech helicopters and deep-water submarines. Boeing is vying with Lockheed—along with French, Russian and Swedish companies and a European consortium—for a fighter jet deal worth about $10 billion.

India is holding flight tests for the fighter jets. Lockheed and Boeing have conducted demonstration flights for Indian celebrities and defense experts. Irrespective of who wins the deal, New Delhi is requiring that at least 50 percent of the contract value be farmed out to Indian companies for goods, labour and material.

After terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India’s financial capital, in November, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh vowed to overhaul the country’s intelligence service and weaponry. And he has since reiterated the pledge.

“We will do all that is necessary to modernize the security and intelligence services, and that’s a commitment which is essential,” Singh said after a budget announcement this summer.

Almost every weekend, there are cocktails and closed-door presentations in the suites of New Delhi’s five-star hotels, hosted by retired admirals and generals from the US armed forces who now work for defense firms, such as Raytheon and Northrop Grumman.

Sir in 1965 india and pakistan used american weapons? i didn't know that. i thought it was american weapon vs russian weapon. Was america supplied india american weapons before specially india joined russia in cold war? And we didnt just faught 1965 war. India and pak faught many wars including 1971 and 1999 where india caught american, german and chinese weapons in large number. India mostly uses russian weapons. Anyway about spending 100 billion dollars in decade that puts 10 billion dollars per year. Thats not huge number to replace our soviet era weapons but still its good amount. If america wanna give india latest technology weapons then yes in most of 100 billion dollars america would have huge chunk of it.

.
i think Indian force should buy more Indian made weapon...
And should be less depend on other and if we are getting the tech then only we should go for those foreign weapon.......

developing Indian defense sector is very important for india.........

$USD100bn in coming decade is not bad...........

Sir i totally agree with you but if its home made weapons then it wont be advanced as western weapons. As know our bofors guns in a war. We need to buy western weapons with full TOT and that would benefit our own engineers to make better weapons. First countries protection comes first. We cant wait till our engineers make something. We should guard our nation first. We cant leave our nation without protection shield waiting for indian engineers produce weapons. Indians not aggressive. We cant produce weapons without help. We are best in harmless technology like space etc etc but we poorer then poor in offensive weapons. Spending 100 billion dollars on weapons from west wont harm india. It would protect our borders and will bring technology to our engineers. i would call it smart thinking by india sir.

US and UK supplied considerable quantities of armament and equipment to India post 1962 war with China.

US supplied weapons but only for a short time. And almost all of it was ammunition and transport planes - no hardcore military hardware. Soon after 1965 war, India expanded its military relationship with USSR considerably, closing the doors for US and UK military suppliers. The only major acquisitions from UK included SEPECAT Jaguar and Sea-Harriers but that was much later.

Bang! Mentioning of this purchase prior to its time has psychological effect. May be India is looking to "warn" China to keep its hands down. But this has a reverse effect too. Understand why Israel is desperate to stop Iran from procuring nuclear arsenals before it becomes "impossible" and it is likely that they would do something which would incapacitate Iran before time.

I see India is rolling along a suicidal mission by proving itself as an emerging and strengthening threat for China in addition to Pakistan. We know how India feels when it has power (recalling Indian attitude towards Pakistan after they conducted nuclear tests and we had not) and after gaining muscles worth 100 billions, it is sure to get more out of mind. I feel its a golden time for the China and Pakistan to join hands and incapacitate India or it will get "impossible" if you let it grow for another 10 years. I already feel the "game" is out of Pakistan's Hands. It is a question if China is willing to wait and have India strengthening every day after having USA on the back. Lines have already been drawn and intentions behind such developments are clear.

You are right friend. Lines are drawn, but only in the sand. Keep in mind nothing in life is rigid, everything can be influenced. Hope always remains. Even hope that Israel will become a peaceful nation, but this must be down of international persuasion. If Israel accepts it's current boundaries and leave West Bank and Gaza to become Palestine, we can coerce Muslim nations to accept this new reality.

What kind of post is this?

What point you want to prove here?

You are thinking right and its good to see you hope for the best but please have a look at history of Israel and who reasonable they have been since 1947. Just by thinking, realities dont change.

We can expect India to be a good friend and not being hostile but just have a look how they are stopping our water and how helpful they are proving in Baluchistan. So you need to think and prepare for the worst case scenarios or history would remember you as "a Hopeful Nation who died Hoping for Life"
