India plans to build its second indigenous aircraft carrier after the first one becomes operational by 2015 -16.

The first one – 40,000 tonnes Indigenous Aircraft Carrier 1 (IAC-1) – is being constructed at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) since 2009 and is expected to be inducted by 2017.

Subsequently, CSL will undertake construction of the second carrier, which will be bigger than the first one.

“The indigenous aircraft carrier programme is planned to be a continuing process over the next decade as Indian Navy aims to have at least two fully operational and combat worthy carriers available at any given time,” Navy Chief Admiral Nirmal Verma said in his talk at the International Institute of Strategic Studies in London on Monday.

With India’s lone carrier INS Viraat at the fag end of its career, Navy is set to receive Russian-origin INS Vikramaditya in December to boost its capability.

The IAC-1 will be launched in water by 2013 and may start sea-trials by 2016. The programme is almost two and half years behind schedule as the target launch date was 2010. As the Navy’s long-term perspective plan envisages having three carrier battle groups, the CSL will start building IAC-2 once the work on the first one is over. A must to have in the repository to be projected as a powerful maritime nation, a carrier battle group is a small flotilla of warships at the core of which lie an aircraft carrier.

Verma said Navy’s induction programme was structured in such a way that every year over the next 5 years, as many as five ships and submarines would be inducted if shipyards deliver the platforms on contract schedule.

India to build second aircraft carrier

cochin shipyard should try to mnimize the delays while atleast constructing IAC2
they should have learned valuable leasons during the construction of IAC1 hope they can construct IAC2 faster or within scheduled timeframe

.
they should complete it within 2 years now put it on trials and then keep it reserved

. .
Can't we undertake parallel constructions? While CSL makes IAC-1 ,cant some other shipyard undertake the construction of IAC-2?

. .
First finish the first one first and see if it works, then move on to the other...

Only CSL has the required facilities to build such a large warship in India (>40,000 tonnes), also work on second AC can only be started when minimum amount of work is completed in the IAC-1 & ship re-launched.

First finish the first one first and see if it works, then move on to the other...

we are not building a prototype in IAC-1, it has to work, there can only be minor changes to it & that to after sea trials.

bhai, yeh toh US bhi nahi kar sakta, how will India do it??

Absolutely, IAC -2 would be bigger, better & made in less time than IAC-1, the much of delays that took place in IAC-1 was b'coz India was for first time making such a large warship, apart from objections from IAF & also late delivery of gear boxes & required steel for the AC. So hope IAC-2 gets completed in 6-7 years timeframe.

withing next 5 years we will have both the ships ready

so we will have in total, 5 Aircraft carriers :yahoo:

.
vikrant will join indian navy in 2016 due to delays.
but the pipapav shipyard is indias biggest shipyard when we can give cochin a chance to build for the 1st time why can't we consider pipapav

Design works of IAC-2 will have been completed till that time and then construction works will start when IAC-1 will go to water for trail. there is no need to hurry as IN need more submarines, frigates, destroyers etc before having more than 2 ACs. also, IAC-2 is being planned for a Super Carrier level capabilities, may be nuclear powered also, which would station on Andoman Nicobar to do Global Works as the INS Vikramaditya and IAC-1 will have covered the two sides of Indian water borders till then. and a big fish would certainly take time :agree:. dont expect IAC-2 before 2020/22 ...............................

how 5?

one we have. (which we will retire)
one we are getting now from Russia.
IAC-1
IAC-2

so 4 at max right if we think we will not retire current AC and also get IAC-2.

Please tell me how 5. that would be too good a thing really...

bhai, yeh toh US bhi nahi kar sakta, how will India do it??

the IAC1 construction started in 2009, but there was a lot of delay in AB/A grade steel from Russia, 90% would have been finished by now.
IAC2 will come out a year or two earlier so max 3 years. Since our experience on IAC1 will count.

2 saal bologe to 3 saal main ayega, 5 saal bologe to 6 saal main ayega :P

. .
India should really think about one of the Elizabeth class carrier built by the UK (talks were there of UK offering it to India), it's of much greater size & more capable, it will make IN a truly blue water navy.
