NEW DELHI - India is to buy lightweight torpedoes to arm the U.S.-made P-8I long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft that the Indian Navy has ordered.

The Pentagon has officially notified the U.S. Congress of the potential sale of Mk-54 lightweight torpedoes to the Indian Navy, an Indian Defence Ministry official said. The deal will be a government-to-government sale.

The torpedo is an anti-submarine weapon that can be fired from the P-8I aircraft with a high kill probability.

The Navy is buying 12 P-8I aircraft from the U.S. under contracts signed in 2008 and 2010.

The Mk-54, the most advanced lightweight torpedo in the U.S. Navy's inventory, will provide the Indian service with effective long-range anti-submarine warfare capabilities. The final content and price for the deal will be determined during discussions between the governments, an official of the U.S. Embassy here said.

"This sale reflects the mutual benefits of the U.S.-India security partnership," a U.S. Embassy statement said. "For India, the combined sale of the P-8I aircraft with the Mk-54 torpedoes will add to India's anti-submarine capability as it expands its ability to protect India and the critical sea lanes of the Indian Ocean. The offer highlights the U.S. commitment to share cutting-edge technology with India, and to ensure that both nations enjoy the benefits of a secure and stable South Asia."

Why aren't they getting the aerial variants of the Varunastra torpedoes that operate from submarines? I am sure that a minor modification should make them capable enough to be used for aerial attacks.

Because is it a heavyweight torpedo, not a lightweight torpedo.

Varunastra: 533mm diameter, 7.6 m long, 1,500 kg, range of up to 30 km

Mk54: 324mm diameter, 2.71-2.87 m long, 276-293kg, (underwater) range about 10km, top speed about 72 km/h

Why IN is not using the advanced lightweight torpedo developed by NPOL,DRDO??According to wiki it has entered production.

Pardon my lack of knowledge but will these birds go that close to the submarine? Isnt it risky? Cant they arm with something that has a range of atleast 100 to 150 kms?
One more question...what is the maximum range of a torpedo?

One more question...what is the maximum range of a torpedo?

40-50 Kms. is often mentioned on Defence sites...

However for Torpedos- Endurance is the key.. The more time they can spend in the water , the better Kill ratio..

good choice by IN the Mk.54 will be a force multiplier for the Navy i think that IN should also consider using the torpedoes developed by DRDO on the P-8I

How this is a good news buddies?Despite of having better indigenous weapons we have to buy low graded weapons from US.Like our Brahmos is fas superior to Harpoon and NSTL developed TAL or Torpedo Advanced Light with exact same capabilities with the mk54,yet we can't use them on our P 8Is because we bought them from US.

And how do you know that NSTL TAL is inferior? It's a newer system built according to strict GSQR SET by IN.It had to go through 2 years of rigorus user trials before being cleared for production last year.Ok,for the sake of debate even if we believe that mk54 is better still why using Harpoons when by the time the P 8I will be inducted the air launched Brahmos will be ready. Now don't say that Harpoons are better mr civilised. That will make you the child.
