India tiger population declines

this may sound crazy, but starting a farm for species is a good idea. in thailand, there's a crocodile farm, where they have bred crocs, mostly endagered species. some of the crocs are used for leather skin. this significantly reduced hunting of crocs within the area. trying to get an animal to survive in the wild isn't cutting it in india. people still continue to hunt animals in guarded parks and even kill the rangers. just a suggestion, that i know won't do anything!

hmm. that's a good idea. the same principle can be applied in case of tigers infact, why not clone a lot of tigers, kill them and make tiger skins, claws etc available legally on the open market. that will destroy the poaching industry. that itself will be a major relief. then we can concentrate on habitat preservation.

^^^Jeff hit the nail on the head. the Tiger is simply a symbol for the much more widespread degradation of the environment. Simply breeding the tiger in captivity is like treating the symptom, and not the disease.

but by curing the symptom, you are often curing the disease. in order for the symptom to be completely cured, the disease has to be cured.

if tiger cnservation is stepped up, then obviously environmental conservation will also have to be stepped up. if we clone tigers, more habitat will be needed, and the govt will be forced to spare more areas for wildlife, thus preserving the ecosystem and preventing environment degradation

Recently china was insiting India for breeding the tiger population in order to arrest depleting population of tiger, but key motive behind such offering was to meet ever increasing demands of tiger skin and carcasses in tibet and china. Envirnomentalist protest this move vigourously, since then I haven't heard anything progress on this issue of chinese offering. The point was that if India opted this offer, then it may lead to all out poaching of remaining tigers existed in our wild, since this move simply doesn't gurantee that poaching will get stopped in our wild and it may encourage poachers to hunt the tigers with full vigur.

But there is a huge difference between artificial breeded verus naturally breeded tigers. Naturally breeded tigers are more acclmatize to the sorrounding environment and plays an important role in food circle in our ecosystem, in contrast artifically breeded doesnt gurantee their acclamtization with nature and hence simply could play a vital role in food chain depends upon which our environmental ecosystem. The point here is that wheather artifically breeded tiger would get adjuscent with food chain and resultant implication on our environment.

i don't intend for tigers to be killed systematically on farms for meat and fur. what my point is to have tigers bred in captivity. there's no need to clone tigers. this is being done all over the world. why? it's because the situation looks grim and no one knows if the tigers in the wild will make. just recently, they found extinct species of lions that survived in zoos and animal circus.

India to spend $12.5m on tiger preservation

NEW DELHI: India will spend $12.5 million to create a special force to guard its last surviving tigers, as numbers dwindle in the face of rampant poaching and destruction of their habitat. Poorly armed and badly paid guards, mismanagement and corruption undermine the protection of tigers in India. There are thought to be just 1,411 left in India, according to a new survey that cut numbers by half since 2002 census. The decline is even more alarming considering India had about 40,000 tigers a century ago.

Conservationists say it is unlikely the dwindling population will ever recover, but the government is not giving up just yet. On Friday, Finance Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram announced a $12.5 million one-off grant, mainly to raise, arm and deploy a special Tiger Protection Force. “The number 1,411 should ring the alarm bell. That is the number of tigers in India,” he told parliament, presenting his budget for 2008/09. “The tiger is under grave threat.” A severe lack of funds has meant forest guards and other staff have to wait up to a year to be paid and key positions have been left vacant. reuters
