What Xinx said was right. MKI can pick out the F 16 faster, fire out the missle and move away. You can have lots of multi page sections creating hypothetical scenarios how they won't be like that but that won't change the facts. It's not for nothing tht MKIs are called 'mini AWACS'

More over just compare the ranges for Radars of blk 52 and MKI plus the lock on ranges for R77 and 120C .. MKI is sure to kill atleast in BVR mode, provided no counter measures are successful against the incoming missile.

This news says that astra suffered from minor glitch during the tests.

Chaudhuri, Chairman of Astra's Flight Readiness Review Committee and Associate Director, Research Centre Imarat (RCI), one of the premier laboratories of DRDO told The Hindu that the missile's manoeuvrability went off as expected as it reached an electronically- simulated target in 15 seconds at an altitude of 12 km. “It didn't function as per our expectation after that,” he added. He said the launch happened smoothly up to the target interception stage. The scientists wanted to give one more command to the missile after it intercepted the target. However, one channel didn't function.

What was the missile supposed to do after the interception?...... Maybe perform three backflips and do a 'waka waka' dance mid air!:woot:

On serious note was it a faliure in relaying some post interception data from the instruments on the missile?

A question to you ? Is the seeker in Astra indigenious or are we putting some other seeker on Astra.

I happened to read somewhere -- Astra has russian seeker -- probably adder's -- defeats the whole purpose ! If enemy knows the frequency of adder , then a new missile in the form of Astra is not going to change the 'status quo'.

As per news reports are concerned and according to BR members visited Aero India..... Astra, AAD, PAD all of them have Indian seekers but for development of Astra's seeker we needed some foreign helps due to miniaturization. Some say we got help from Russia, some say its from France. But the seeker itself is indigenous.

Astra faces glitch after meeting ?basic objective’

For the second consecutive day, air-to-air missile, Astra launched from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, Orissa, encountered a glitch after meeting the “basic objective” of the mission.

The test of the Beyond Visual Range missile was carried out on Wednesday at 2.05 p.m. as part of the developmental trials. The objective of the mission was to prove high manoeuvrability and lateral acceleration at a speed of around 2.4 Mach. The missile was also test-fired on Tuesday night.Astra is envisaged to engage and destroy fast moving aerial targets at supersonic speeds (1.2. to 1.4 Mach).

The single stage, solid propelled missile is the smallest developed by DRDO. It can be launched at three different altitudes to cover ranges from 21 to 110 km. After some tests, it would be integrated with Sukhoi-30 initially and subsequently with MIG-29 and Light Combat Aircraft.

The bolded part is not making sense at all to me and these numbers have cropped couple of times. do they mean striking the fighters at sea level at mach 1.2 to 1.4?
