India tests Astra BVRAAM

Good news for india since it'll help in future development of more advanced variants. But if we consider the present scenario paf's f16s are being equipped with aim 120D bvr aams. How are we gonna counter that threat since our r77s are older and less advanced than latest aim120d ?Astra in present state seems even inferior to r77.

PAF getting AIM-120C5 not D.

IAF already has R-27 with 130 km range and RVV-AE with 100 km range. But Astra is superior in terms of operational capabilities because jammers for a A2A missile can be developed by the source country or any other country that bought the missile. So its better to have an indigenous missile. Astra is modern, immune to jamming, Ku-band seeker, smokeless propellant, dual processor based computer, fibre-optic gyro based INS, laser proximity fuse and directional warhead made it one of the best in its class.

Well they going to test it from plane or ground test like they conducted in january:undecided:

.
Well must admire the desire to produce stuff locally ;)

Just make sure you all sit behind a concrete bunker just in case the missile sorta goes out of control :smokin:

 he he nice one :D but dont worry DRDO all of a sudden has a lot of successes under its belt.

so they can do it.

They must be testing it from plane imo...

And about our AAM inventory; others have to catch up quite a bit to reach our level..
R-77,R-73, Matra Super 530, R-27, ASTRA , Ks-172 , METEOR/AIM-120D ,MICA ::aren't they enough..?;)

Dude, R-77 and RVV-AE are the same missiles. Its K-100 not Kh-100. As far as I remember we don't have AIM-120D and if we don't select F-16IN or F-18E/F we will not get AIM-120D. Same for Meteor, though there were some news that India have shown interest in Meteor. We also have Derby BVR AAM from Israel.

they dont have AIM120D it is AIM120C-5 only... Indian side there are 2 types R77 & R77m so no prbs:azn:

From Wiki:

The R-77's main advantage over the AIM-120 AMRAAM is in range and maneuverability. The longer range is because the R-77 is a larger 200 mm vs 178 mm (8 vs 7 in), heavier 175 vs 150 kg (386 vs 335 lb) missile than the AMRAAM and contains more propellant. Like most AAM weapons, the claimed range is for a non-maneuvering target, at a high altitude, and probably on a head on aspect with a respectable closing rate. Lower altitudes, rear aspect, or maneuvering targets will all reduce this range, but the same applies to the AMRAAM

Its really a good news India testing its own AAM missile with such long range. Does someone has reliable resource regarding its test platform , is it going to be tested from some AC or groud based launchers?

Good going India .. quite an achievement indeed.

I am waiting for the day it will be finally inducted to IAF. God knows when

Can you explain it a bit more ? I dont think its true. A missile can be jammed regardless of whether a country has brought a missile or not... If that were the case IAF would not have answer to AIM 120 C.
Aircrafts such as growler does jam the radars of the aircrafts that fires the missiles -- if they can jam the radars , then pretty much they can jam the missiles fired from the aircrafts.

So its better to have an indigenous missile. Astra is modern, immune to jamming, Ku-band seeker, smokeless propellant, dual processor based computer, fibre-optic gyro based INS, laser proximity fuse and directional warhead made it one of the best in its class.

Astra is active guidance system BVR missile. Active guidance BVR missiles can be jammed unless the missile has a capability to home in on the equipment that is trying to generate the jamming signals.

For example :-

AIM 120 C5 is a active guidance BVR missile. However the great thing about this missile is , if a aircraft tries to JAM the missile then AIM 120 changes its guidance and homes in on the source which is trying to send the jamming signals.

ASTRA doesnt have this capability , as far as i know it is just another active guidance missile.
