India tells Sri Lanka Have CEPA at Sri Lanka’s pace’

An understanding Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has told Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa at a recent meeting in New Delhi to conduct the negotiations on the terms of the Indo-Lanka Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) at Sri Lanka’s pace, .

This was disclosed by Treasury Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera when he addressed the National Chamber of Exporters at Hotel Taj Samudra last night. Dr Jayasundera was responding to a question from a member of the audience as to what the status quo was on CEPA.

Dr Jayasundera said that he had been present at the meeting between the Indian and Sri Lankan leaders at which it was mutually decided to have an open and extensive dialogue on the CEPA matter. It was then that the Indian Premier told Sri Lankan President to have the CEPA at Sri Lanka’s pace. President Rajapaksa had also underscored the importance of discussing what was good and positive for the local economy and also reiterated that the primary objective was that the Sri Lankan interests were looked after.

The Treasury Secretary also assured that "Sri Lanka will also restrategise its plans to adapt to the changing global economic environment," he said.

wait till tamilnadu Chief minister opposes it and then watch manmohan singh doing fast retreat as he did in Bangladesh over teesta issue after mamta banarjee pulled out of the tour opposing teesta settlement. Then we will see how soon friendly gesture turns into acrimony.Truth is that center is weak in india due to coalition compulsions It would be better that countries sharing borders with indian union negotiate deals with the bordering states bypassing new delhi.New delhi at present in its dying stage same as it was during last mughal emperor days.

Surly Tamilnadu state will oppose this......

Normally they will oppose anything when they hear the name SRI LANKA…….

:undecided: :undecided:

Most of trade unions don't like this CEPA with India, I think GoSL will have to face tough time with trade unions.

We have enough reasons for it.

Anyway a CEPA with SL will only benefit India so we have no problem.

We will keep saying that for another several years…….

Due to lack of interest in Sri Lanka

Like Skyline said Most of trade unions don't like this CEPA with India…

Let’s wait & see……. :yahoo:

Fine even then its not a big deal.

Its a deal where we get a benefit and incur no harm if there was no deal.

Big deal :D

Not likely. Unlike in WB, the TN political parties are not a major part of the coalition government. TN always has an anti-SL rhetoric. But unlike in WB,this is a national foreign policy matter which does not affect the people of the state. Any protest that comes up will simply be brushed aside and ignored.
