I am not surprised. Just last year BBC reported this:

BBC News - 'More poor' in India than Africa

Now how can India bring 421 million people out of severe poverty and become rich in just one year. I dont know why Indians try so hard to hide the reality behind the computer. What do you want to achieve by lieing? Its better to accept reality so you can work on improving.

“A superpower is a political, economic and military giant that has global reach,” he said. “The US still holds that position. It can fight a war in East Asia or any other part of the world. But I can’t imagine China or India doing that.”

we accept the reality mate,it is you who cannot accept that we 'accept the reality' and a country is not considered a superpower by the number of poor people but on its ability to protect its interest throughout the world

Indian poverty levels higher than Pakistan's, says UN report

The report also finds more 'gender equality' in conservative Pakistan than in 'tolerant' India.

Its findings amount to a wake-up call for a nation which has taken great pride in its rapid economic growth and the increasing clout of its billionaire business leaders but has failed to share the spoils with its poor. Britain's Department for Internmational Development has pointed to this chequered progress to justify its continuing aid to India.

The Human Development Report reveals that while India ranks slightly above Pakistan in its level of 'human development' – based on life expectancy, schooling and per capita income – its wider poverty level is worse than Pakistan's.

In absolute terms, 41.6 per cent of India's 1.1 billion people earned less than 78 pence per day compared with 22.6 per cent of Pakistan's 173 million.

The report quotes its 'multi-dimensional poverty index' which includes measures of schooling, child mortality, nutrition, access to electricity, toilets, drinking water, and hygienic living conditions, and reveals India is poorer.
It found 53.7 per cent of Indians suffering from this broader kind of poverty, compared with 49 per cent of Pakistanis.
More surprisingly, India is ranked below Pakistan and Bangladesh on gender equality which reflects maternal death rates, teenage pregnancies, access to education, and the number of women parliamentarians and in the workplace.

India's rural development minister Jairam Ramesh said the report highlighted the prevalence of poverty in the midst of economic growth and the possibility that "actually economic development may lead to retrogression of social indices." Priya Subramanian of Save the Children said India's poor ranking reflected a lack of political will to tackle poverty.

"It is things like healthcare and education which have India lagging behind Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. These countries are well on track and India, with its fast growing economy, has still not got its act together," she said.

"While we have a new band of millionaires, on the other side people continue to suffer endlessly. Millions still live below the poverty line and go to sleep hungry. The [economic] growth has not flowed towards them," she added.

India super poor, not superpower, says Shashi Tharoor
November 18, 2011 DC

The eminent writer and Congress MP, Mr Shashi Tharoor, on Thursday did some plain talk on India’s global aspirations and said the country was ‘super-poor rather than a superpower’.

Talking to BBC presenter, Ms Anita Anand, on ‘India and China — The New Superpowers,’ Mr Tharoor said he would rather describe the two countries as being on the way of becoming significant powers.

“A superpower is a political, economic and military giant that has global reach,” he said. “The US still holds that position. It can fight a war in East Asia or any other part of the world. But I can’t imagine China or India doing that.”

He added that a large chunk of India’s people did not get three meals a day, had no roof to sleep under and were unable to educate their children. “We still haven’t solved these basic problems,” he said. “So we can’t claim to be a superpower.”

Mr Tharoor, an ace diplomat, added that he would much rather live in a world without superpowers. “In fact, I am penning a book on the theme of a network of countries, a multi-polar world, drawing on the metaphor of the Internet,” he said.

The MP said he felt awful when he heard the Western coinage ‘Chindia’ to refer to the two aspiring superpowers. “Though we are neighbours, we don’t have much in common,” he said. “There is ignorance, indifference and hostility towards India in China.”

There was not much soft diplomacy in terms of people-to-people contact and tourism to create more awareness of each other either, he added.

Another article from Novemeber 2011, and this time from an Indian news source.

India has more 'multidimensionally poor' than Pakistan

NEW DELHI: More than half of India's population at 612 million is "multidimensionally poor" - or deficit in health, education and living standards - making it the world's largest such number of poor, according to the UN Human Development report 2011.

A comparison with the neighbour Pakistan shows 49 percent of its population is multidimensionally poor.

According to the report, released Wednesday, multidimensional poverty index (MPI) assesses acute poverty levels and examines factors such as health services, access to clean water and cooking fuels, basic household goods and home construction standards, which together offer a fuller portrait of poverty than income measurements alone.

The MPI measures deficits in health, education and living standards, combining both the number of deprived people and the intensity of their deprivations.

These deprivations are more acute among the multidimensionally poor, said the report.

Deprivations in sanitation among multidimensionally poor people in India range from 3.5 percent in Kerala to more than 70 percent in Bihar, stated the report.

According to it, in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, the two poorest regions, more than 90 percent of the multidimensionally poor lack access to modern cooking fuel.

More than 85 percent of poor people in both regions lack access to improved sanitation.

The report said the world's most disadvantaged people carry a "double burden" as they are more vulnerable to environmental degradation, they must also cope with immediate environmental threats from indoor air pollution, dirty water and unimproved sanitation.

And India is not even affected by War On Terror, so how come more percentage of Indians are poor compared to Pakistanis.

China is second world nation and India is third world nation.

As simply as it gets. :coffee:

China is a Third World country. We are not in the first world, and we haven't been in the second world since the Sino-USSR split, and the second world ceased to exist after 1991 anyway. Government and official media statements also self-identifies us as a third world country, i.e. we often say we're the first third world country to achieve this or that. And we participate in third world groupings and activities like the Third World Academy of Sciences.

I know third worldism is perhaps a little bit out-of-fashion now, still I'll say very proudly that I come from third world country.

Let me ask you "Why you want India remember 200 years colony by British, and want Vietnam forgot what China did to Vietnam for over 1000 years ago and lately 1974, 1979, 1988?"

Indian poverty levels higher than Pakistan's, says UN report - Telegraph

22% for Pakistan is old data of 2005 and using this data for 2011 is stupidity because poverty already has increased too much in Pakistan. many in Pakistan government believe that poverty is miscalculated in Pakistan and it is about 32% and other say it is as high as 40-50%.
