Skeletons discovered in Indian police building
Sacks containing dismembered skulls and bones found in an unused room of an Indian police building
Opposition leaders in India have demanded an investigation after 100 human skeletons were found in a police store room.
Sacks containing dismembered skulls and bones were found by decorators who looked in through the store room window while painting the local police station in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh.
The discovery comes two weeks after 80 decaying bodies were found floating in the River Ganges nearby.
Police said the store room was a “viscera house” where bodies were taken for post-mortem examinations before 2008.
The skeletons are of bodies "that were not disposed of properly”, said Mahendra Pratap Singh, Unnao’s superintendent of police.
According to records more than 1,000 body parts from 100 unidentified bodies were kept in the store.
Local opposition leader Pankaj Singh demanded a full investigation and said he believed the remains could be those of people murdered for their organs.
Local police officers said the 12ft by 15ft room was once part of a police hospital and that the skeletons were more than 20 years old.
