NEW DELHI: India's National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon on Tuesday advocated for holding dialogue with 'saner' elements in Pakistan, rejecting opposition from within the country which urged the government not to engage in dialogue with Islamabad until there was an end to all terror attacks, The Times of India reported.

Delivering the Sardar Patel memorial lecture on India and the World, Menon said that India should talk to 'saner' elements in Pakistan.

Referring to the Congress "iron man' Sardar Ballavbhai Patel, he said, "Our Pakistan policy still faces the dilemmas that Patel's generation faced: of how to prevent the enemies of India from having their way. Patel's answer was clear, as you saw from his Amritsar speech: fight your enemies at a time and place of your choosing but do not make innocents, the people, (or refugees in that specific case), victims of your policy."

Talking about the pressure from within India demanding that talks not to be held with Pakistan unless conditions became conducive, after the recent clashes at the Line of Control (LoC) Menon said, "When 40 self-styled experts and some political groups say do not talk to Pakistan until ideal conditions exist and all terrorism stops it betrays a lack of self-confidence. That is precisely what the terrorists and their sponsors in the Pakistani establishment want, for us not to talk to those in Pakistan who might differ from them."

The India NSA was of the view that India stood to gain more in case

"Not talking does not change the behaviour of our enemies. In fact it hands them a success that only encourages them. At the very least talking to the saner elements in Pakistan could encourage them to stand for the right policies and could create confusion among our enemies," he added.

Patel, he said, reminded Indians that they should build their internal strength to be able to deal with the world more ably.

"That was his core message, which it was from strength that one had to negotiate, not just talk, about the issues. But at the same time, as his own example shows, he did not wait for ideal situations and conditions in order to engage."

Finally someone a little more sane. Wars can never solve anything. Both sides have grievousness, it's much better to negotiate your differences then let them divide you.

Without disagreeing that talks are necessary, I find the argument of talking to "saner elements" in Pakistan quite odd. Who exactly are these "saner" elements? And what does one talk to them about? Do the saner elements have power over the "insane" elements? Is India's problem the saner elements or the insane elements? How do you guarantee any deal with the so called "saner" elements? What point?

.
Saner or not. We don't want to talk to you(Indians).

I agree with your point that wars don't solve anything but what will you negotiate exactly? And who with? It is like the Ahmadis and the Hazaras negotiating with the "saner" elements? The saner elements are hardly the problem, are they? It is the insane ones who are and they are in no one's control....supposedly.

Saner or not. We don't want to talk to you(Indians).

Tell that to your government. They seem to want to talk.

Its all diplomacy. They also know the fact that nothing is going to come out of this "talks".

Many things are done in this world for no reason. Indo-Pak talks is one of them.

I agree.

'Saner' elements in Pakistan may want to talk & that too with all good intentions. But if nothing moves without the consent of 'insane' elements, then what's the point in talking to 'saner' elements?

And what do u purpose will be the end game? Perpetual struggle and in the end Pakistan's demise (witch is not even that far fetched).?

Ur word are empty with the nature of one who has to bear no responsibility .

For India its clearly not a problem to isolate Pakistan.

Status quo. You can't do our demise. Not through a war. It is the internal threats that might cause it. But then Pakistan has the ability to fight them. It is the confusion in the country that is stopping it to fight them. I hope after 2014 this might change. Pakistan is too tough a country to die that easily. You should have learned this in the past 60+ years.

Pakistan is foolhardy not tough , its makes it easier for it to fall. Look at AFG that is what it looks like for ur kind of "Tough" people. Pakistan is short on supplies, manpower and moral no matter how much one tries to sugar coat it Pakistan cant fight this alone period .

if the Maoist insurgency is any Indicator look at its scale(nothing comparatively) and the years it took .

then give me your mobile Number I will call and talk to you..:P

Talks with Pakistan is BS. Pakistan is a mumbo-jumbo state. Pakistani institution don't respect each other. Army fck the civil govt every now and then. People are full of anger (Angry Pakistan). They are angry on USA, INDIA, Israel, TTP, LeJ, Govt.. In short they are angry with everything.

The Big question is "Is sane elements have any right/power in Pakistan?"

Well you can wish for Pakistan to fall. I won't want to change your perception on that. Looks like that decades old dream of eliminating Pakistan still exists in Bharat. Another reason we shouldn't talk to you. :)
