Bangalore: BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Ltd (BATL) has bagged an additional order worth Rs 120 crore from BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd. Sources tell Express that BATL will now manufacture critical components of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile at its Chakkai installation in Thiruvananthapuram. “The fresh orders are for F-3 section, metallic airframe components and CPHS (Combined Pneumo Hydraulic System).
This is in addition to whatever BATL was executing for the BrahMos project,” sources said. BATL is also making launcher containers for BrahMos missile, which had ran into some technical specification snags, but now said to be fixed. The airborne launcher (which holds the missile on Sukhoi-30MKI) prototype has been cleared now. BATL has started work on the actual airborne launcher for Sukhoi. A limited series production order of five sets is in place and the mass production of the launchers is now at a striking distance.
Amidst the man-made mess and internal squabbles, BATL is slowly and steadily marshalling its forces to be on the mission mode.
“There’s no dearth for order, but dedication is the key,” sources said. For the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), BATL is already supplying its star product Vikas engine, apart from titanium gas bottle.
BATL is also producing Secondary Injection Thrust Vector Control (SITVC) tanks for ISRO.
“They have been given a new order of six more L-40 tanks for GSLV. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) wants the most-critical and complex radio-frequency quadruple from BATL.
This is the first time an attempt is being in India to make the sensitive component for BARC,”
sources said.
The Defence Research and Development
Organisation (DRDO) has placed orders for air-
booster casing, B1 & B2 motor cases for missiles,
gas generators and gyro valves. “The Astra air-
to-air beyond visual range missile cases will also now be developed at BATL,” source said..

I've heard reported the Brahmos costs $6 million apiece. That sounds pretty hefty for an expendable weapon. Any idea about Babur's cost?

Well, how many would you sanction in an anti-radiation or anti-material roles, given the fact that it's an expendable weapon. Swarms of CMs flying into Pakistan (as Indian Brahmos can't effectively be used over the Himalayas into China but at a much shorter range) in a first-strike may not be possible because there won't be enough missiles.

Cost may also prohibit you from targeting two at the same target, and we know from GW1 that reportedly 40% T'hawks malfunctioned on first ignition. The US could still manage to spend 3000-4000 of them because producing that many had pulled the cost down.

Contrary to fanboy opinion, Pakistan neither India won't rain each other with thousands of ballistic missiles. There may be a few hundreds, and with several targeted at certain single locations, they'd serve as precision-strike tools rather than a long-winded bombing tool. India reportedly only produced several hundred Prithvis, and we could estimate similar figures for the Shaheen and the M11. Now India can afford to have fewer missiles, since Pakistan isn't very wide and India has recourse to aerial bombardment by fixed-winged aircraft. For Pakistan, which has a much smaller airforce and platforms that generally carry smaller loads, the job of deep strike may be handed over to the strategic force command. That means a lot of missiles (e.g. China reportedly maintains ~1400 missiles constantly targeted over Taiwan) and that's much too costly for Pakistan. And that's not what they're doing, since Internet reported only about 40 Shaheen 1 launchers and 16 Shaheen 2 launchers, and that's nowhere close enough for prolonged bomb delivery. That makes you wonder what role has India employed its missiles in. In 1999 the media reported India erected ~12 missiles (i.e. launchers) at the border, in 2012 there's be several times more, but still, making them in the thousands like China is a good way to drain your budget.

BrahMos is a ramjet-propelled supersonic missile dude. Subsonics are always cheaper to operate and use than supersonics and now, hypersonics. Why do you think we are developing subsonic Nirbhay cruise missiles? Cost of course!

BrahMos costs $4.5 million to be precise. But the Hypersonic one would be easily 3/4th the current price tag if not double. The only way to reduce unit costs is to order en masse. That's pointless without a war.

The Bramos is a blowpipe design, which should be quite a bit cheaper than a full-blooded jet engine.
