So you mean that another sub of the size of Arihant (6000 tonnes) is in construction for carrier escort role, or the original Arihant is supposed to do that job?
There is no news about the signing of fgfa contract too

50 Kamov multirole choppers for the Indian Navy.
Better to order more scorpion Sub. As the news coming that IN interesting to buy 3 more.Their was also noise regarding purchase of 2 more Kilos
probably instead of another Akula
Anyone has update on that
Indian Navy is building 6 SSN who will be dedicated for that role. The power plant will be the same as the one for Arihant. So I am fairly certain their tonnage will be similar to Arihant or maybe slightly larger.
That would be 2 SSN for each carrier group. That however will take at least 7-8 years to materialise.
So Akula and Arihant are Stop Gap Arrangement so that In can get the Carrier group into play and gain operational experience.
Arihants are not going to escort Cbgs. It seriously compromise their locations. Ssbns are supposed to be on lone in their jobs...right now akula is the only option.
Arihant does not qualify to be an SSBN for now, as of today its an SSGN since only the K15 has been tested from it.
There is NO Alternative to Arihant for INS Vikrant underwater escort. So its pretty clear that for now that will be Arihan's primary role. Besides a Carrier group provides protection to Arihant too without which it will be lurking near our shores. So its a symbiotic relationship.
Akula will be with INS Vikramaditya. It cannot be at two places at the same time.
Dont want to get too detailed with you. but Arihant is an SSBN and not an SSGN. Sagarika is a ballstics missile. and not a cruise missle. As of now its teh third leg of our nuclear triad.
K15 is not a pure Ballistic missile. Its an Hybrid missile. K15 It never leave atmosphere and the maximum altitude attained by missile is <50km and has a range of 750 to 1500 like an Cruise missile.
Its function is almost like that of an Cruise missile since it has a gliding warhead which is highly manoeuvrable and has low probability of detection due to its depressed flight path.
It will always be the third leg of our nuclear triad till a better option comes up, however that does not exclude it from carrier operations in the absence of any other suitable submarine to be part of the Carrier group.
Or are you suggesting INS VIkrant will have NO Submarine escort ?
US converted its SSBN into SSGN after cruise missile were invented. We have gone the reverse way since in today's age that was more practical.

Arihant class will never escort the AC.. it doesn't qualify.. Using an SSBN to escort the CBG is just more than Crazy. INS Arihant will be still studied for the dev purposes in future and will be purely used as SSBN. K-4 or 5 will be equipped on it in future
