India’s New-Old Carrier Goes to Sea

The INS looks impressive. But, is it for heli-carrying or for plane carrying? There is no sign it can carry planes. It has no space to accomodate planes, and there is no runway, too. Some comments, please.
It was previousely a heli carrier...but after many structural modifications it can now carry 16 mig-29k.....

Let’s start this week off with a newly released pictrue of India’s new aircraft carrier, INS Vikramiditya, setting out from the Sevmash shipyard in Russia to conduct her first sea trials after a massive refit to get her ready for service with the Indian navy.

In a past life, Vikramiditya served in the Soviet and Russian navies as the Baku and Admiral Gorshov — specifically, as an ‘aircraft carrying cruiser’, as the Russians called her. As such, she was armed with a mix of P-550 Bazalt anti-ship cruise missiles, SA-9 Tor surface-to-air missiles and the vertical take-off and landing Yak-38 fighters before being retired in the 1990s.

The Indians have paid for her giant missile tubes to be removed from the bow-section of the ship, freeing up space for the installation of a ski-jump ramp and additional aircraft parking space, making her look very, very similar to China’s new-old aircraft carrier, the ex Soviet-Varyag. She’s slated to be handed over to the Indian navy later this year and once in service, she’ll carry a mix o MiG-29Ks and Sea Harrier fighters, replacing the ancient British-made Viraat as India’s carrier.

Like China, India plans to beef up its carrier forces by fielding two indigenous carrier designs in the coming decade . Unlike China, India has been operating aircraft carriers for decades, giving its navy a serious leg up on how to best use the ships. Remember, China is expected to spend years using the ex-Varyag to master the skills of carrier operations.

They would not have spent that much to put in the ski-jump if they didn't intend to operate fixed-wing from it.

Why dont you guys hang around in India defense section. You are spending more time in BD then India.

Trollol!

In case you are wondering why i  in the earlier posts.

Just for fact sake, If there ever a so called naval confrontation between India and Bangladesh, India wouldn 't use her AC, as IN Frigates and Submarines and other naval assets are sufficient to neutralize any threats from Bangladesh's navy.

As for carrier-killer missiles, we are yet see even a successful test of a ballistic missile hitting a mobile naval target.

I dont know when you became mod....... seriously we did mistake helping you people in 1971.......... If we want , we can occupy your land without any effort.... seriously are you out of mind.... why we need to send an expensive AC for you guys..... are you some where in middle of PACIFIC???? lolz...... BD is surrounded three sides by India and one side with bay of bengal....... and you are talking about India, so just mind your own business....

India fears that Bangladesh will take over Eastern and NE India!!!

For show off.. India wants to prove itself a superpower and might act irrationally. Besides India has no capability to act against other major power so it might choose to act against smaller power like Bangladesh.

India does not need to go outside of its shore. Why it need carrier?

STF........... keep it down troll.....

And you guys in a defence forum ..You guys just come here to bash India, dont you?

I am not trolling, I am askinfg some questions. So, what is your answer to my inquisitveness. Is your carrier is for a heli ride?
