India’s defence imports to reach $30 bn by 2010

Updated at: 1710 PST, Sunday, February 08, 2009
NEW DELHI: Global armament and aerospace firms are flocking to India which is offering rich pickings in military contracts worth tens of billions of dollars despite an economic slowdown.

The hardware-hungry military says it cannot cut defence spending despite the slowdown in India which is suffering the knock-on effects of the global financial crisis.

"Yes, there's the economic turmoil but India's defence programmes will continue as before," Defence Production Secretary Pradeep Kumar said.

"There's no scaling down of the modernisation of the armed forces," he said, announcing 303 international firms will hawk their wares at a February 11-15 air show to be held in Bangalore, hub of India's aerospace industry.

India, the biggest weapons buyer among emerging countries, has imported military hardware worth 28 billion dollars since 2000.

It has earmarked another 30 billion dollars to be spent by 2010 that includes 12 billion dollars on 126 fighter jets for which six global aeronautical giants are in the running.

Nuclear-armed India says it is "fast-tracking" all defence procurement negotiations amid heightened tensions with Pakistan following the massacre last November of 165 people in Mumbai by 10 gunmen"

Leading the pack of international companies at the show will be Germany and France with 31 companies each. Twenty-six British, 24 Russian and 22 US firms will also be at the show along with 289 Indian defence firms, organisers said.

wow thats a lot of money involved but the point is not just procuring weapons but mastering them if they propose to have high end systems they need to master the technology and that needs a lot of time but anyways 30 billion is too big an amount at this point of time where the world is at recession.

thanks

Yeah, they need to get to learn how to use all this equipment properly for it to be effective. They will need to change doctrines and tactics to use their new toys most effectively. Even after taking delivery of them and being trained how to use them they will need time to be able to use them effectively.

It is really 22 Billion considering the MMRCA is 12 billion of those dollars. But still that is a huge amount. I wonder what they are considering to procure? I read that India might have Russia build another batch of Krivak III Frigates, Also if the Indigienous missile efforts fail would they consider buying the Pac-3 batteries? or possible THAAD (UAE just purchased theses)
Still this is a lot of money to waste on arms when the recession is so bad.

Why buy THAAD? THAAD cant stop Long range ballistic missiles my brothers! and U.S wont give THAAD technology to anyone not even, in exchange of Fort Knox!

Shiny Indian armed forces normally places the orders in small batches take an example of smerch batteries. They need them in numbers but first order was for around 30 launchers then over 6 years time they increased it to 83. After mating them effectively in there doctrine.

There is an RFP for purchase of second line of subs around 25000 crore rupees (5 billion dollars). Follow on order for Phalcons is there. That will come to nearly 1.5 billion dollars. IAF has to buy more refueling tankers. And why should the internal effect should fail? Two (only) tests happened and both were successful. If this year tests are successful then it will be deployed by 2012.

Who on earth would shoot long range ballistic missiles at india? The missiles China and pakistan could potentially launch are not Long range ballistic missiles. The countries are too close in proximity to India. Who else would attack India.
I thought i read somewhere about THAAD potentially being offered, but i know that the PAC-3 is definitely up for purchase.
The problem is that India for some reason demands TOT on everything. Im sure that they could purchase THAAD without any TOT. Its more advanced than anything India could come up with indigenously unless Israel provided massive support.

Isn't this is too much of a sweeping statement. Why India should not demand ToT? What is wrong with that? And do US is correct in asking about End user Verification? Can you please clarify.

with so much of money to be invested i would still try to impress that india goes for 2 different air defence and anti missile system .while arrow 2 will incorporate major technologies from the west they can jointly develop a s-500 missile defence system with russia having 2 systems will make better, also there will be no problems with sanctions and supplies. the joint development of the s-500 would also earn money for india in terms of its export potential.

thanx

Russia losing defense market in India
Mon, 02 Feb 2009 15:21:46 GMT

India has progressed far enough the air defense field and currently is not in need of Russian assistance, says a Russian arms trader.

On Monday, the Russian arms trading company Rosoboronexport acknowledged India's achievements in the field adding that it was not going to supply the country with air defense systems in the near future, ITAR-TASS reported.

"India has begun to develop air defense according to scientific principles of other countries, and has progressed far in this field," said deputy director general of the company Viktor Komardin. "Simple purchases no longer suit them,” he added.

The maximum range of Russian arms exports is carried out through the company which represents Moscow in the international market. Indian and Southeast Asian demand accounts for half of the orders Rosoboronexport receives.

The company, however, says it would not cease to make offers to New Delhi.

To keep up the long-standing bilateral strategic and military-technical cooperation, India also reportedly plans to order the advanced MiG-35 fighter aircraft which Russia plans to exhibit in the upcoming airshow in Bangalore Aero India-2009.

I hope jt Indo-Russian S500 exports to be as successful as Brahmos ;)
India is already developing a 150-180km SAM with Israel and its own ABM shield.
I don't think it would be prudent to then go for 2 other systems. Incorportate Russian and Israeli tech to make the home grown ABM better.
