Defence deals between India and Russia are set to cross $16 billion and Moscow is committed to the timely implementation of contracts, including the supply of S-400 air defence systems and production of Kalashnikov rifles and Kamov helicopters.

The two countries signed 14 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) during the recent Defexpo 2020 in Lucknow that covered development and production of land, air and naval systems and hi-tech civilian products.

Russia’s state-run Rosoboronexport inked deals with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for advanced pyrotechnic ignition systems, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for export of spares and services to friendly countries, and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) for land systems, said a statement from the Russian embassy.

A separate MoU was signed by Russian Helicopters and Indo-Russian Helicopters Ltd for localisation of component to be used in Kamov Ka-226 helicopters. India has plans to buy 200 Ka-226 helicopters.

“We are about to cross $16 bn amount of deals. Both sides are committed to their timely and successful implementation, including supply of the S-400...air defence systems by 2025, an early production of Kalashnikov AK-203 machine guns and Ka-226T multi-purpose helicopters under relevant joint ventures with maximum possible level of localisation,” the statement said.

As reported by HT, India made the first payment of $850 million last year for the $5.4-billion deal for five S-400 systems through a special mechanism worked out by the two sides.

The S-400 deal and other purchases of Russian military hardware face the possibility of US sanctions under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA). Despite pressure from the US, India has said it will go ahead with military deals with Russia.

Russia was the largest foreign exhibitor at Defexpo 2020, held during February 5-9, and Moscow remains committed to the Make in India programme and Indian localisation requirements, the statement said.

India starting an arms race in the sub-continent. Pakistan ought to up its ante'

IMO Pakistan should focus on its economy first.

I dont think India will ever attack Pakistan since this move will make Muslim nations blockade Indian and India rely heavily on oil and gas supply from Gulf nations.

India is more on competing with Chinese though.

LOL. You really believe that Pakistan can rely on the help of Muslim nations? I hope that most Pakistanis will never fall for that delusion again

The truth is that the help was really coming during heavy war in 1965 from some heavy Weight Muslim nations. You need to read more history. It includes Indonesia contribution who sends MIGs 19 and Migs 15 planes, 2 submarines, and possible direct India-Indonesia war in Andaman. The truth is the war is ended not long after those 2 submarines has reached Karachi.

yes Muslim nations have contributed and helped Pakistan alot in a good way .. we will do the same if brotherly nations get attacked by someone else
But I don't think there will be a blockade .. .
Currently, the only thing is keeping deterrence in the region is Pakistan own investment in armed forces and nuclear capability

Ok so Russia & India in bed together... that mean the USA is the mistress?
what about China ? are they watching this drama on ‘Cheaters’ ?

Pakistan..?

Hmm..

Is Israel not ' some one else" ?

US and the coalition did what they wanted in Iraq

Unless those nations were not brotherly

Which kind of nations qualify as ' Some one else ' ?

Pakistan must

I think it is still part of the reality, but Pakistan should be in defensive position to get such support and help. If Pakistan take an offensive over India militarily, I think it will be difficult for Muslim nations to stay behind Pakistan.

Oil and gas blockade IMO is not something difficult to decide as we have already had OIC as platform. If Muslim nations are actually quite success in blockading Israel politically and militarily so I dont think it will be different if Pakistan is under military attack from India. India without oil and gas will be very much weaken both economically and militarily. There may some help from Russia to India but I think they dont have enough oil to offset the blockade impact fully.

And dont forget if India is in attack mode, international condemnation and Western sanction may come as well.

Pakistan must

The recent attitude of Muslim nations after India changed the status of Kashmir ought to be an eye opener for Pakistanis who fall for the "brotherly nations" clique. The Gulf states awarded tons of medals to Modi. Indonesia jumped for joy at India's investments in its palm oil industry after Malaysia was cut off due to the Malaysian leader criticizing India. Most Muslim nations turned their heads the other way regarding the move as India's internal affair due to trade with India.

When western nations dropped stable and working governments in Muslim nations including Syria, the Muslim nations joined either Russia or the West in bombing those nations, not caring an iota for the millions of Muslim people of the invaded nation whose lives were destroyed overnight. China and India effectively imprisoned millions of Muslims overnight. Again Muslim nations, save for one or two, remained tight lipped. And yet some Pakistanis still hold hope to the Ummah rushing to their defense if India invades Pakistan. The fact remains that in the past the assistance given was token.

You are right on keeping deterrence part, but dont spend too much on defense while your economy is still in bleeding mode. Dont forget what happen with USSR. They dont lose cold war and break out due to weaker military capability and hardware compared to USA, but it is because its economy condition.

Embargo by OIC not going to happen. Times have significantly changed.

India after lot of dithering for decades is embarking on military procurement to create a massive asymmetry vis a vis Pak.

Defeat and subdue the enemy without firing a bullet.
