Ladakh Clash: The MEA spokesperson was responding to a question on the issue (File)

New Delhi:
India on Saturday strongly rejected China's claim of sovereignty over Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh, asserting that attempts by the Chinese side to "advance exaggerated and untenable" claims are not at all acceptable.

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said China's claim over Galwan Valley was not in accordance with its own position in the past, noting that attempts of transgression by Chinese side were invariably met with appropriate response from the Indian troops.

"The position with regard to the Galwan Valley area has been historically clear. Attempts by the Chinese side to now advance exaggerated and untenable claims with regard to Line of Actual Control (LAC) there are not acceptable. They are not in accordance with China's own position in the past," he said.

The MEA spokesperson was responding to a question on the issue.

The Galwan Valley was the site of the violent clash between the two militaries on Monday evening in which a Colonel and 19 other Indian Army soldiers were killed. China's People''s Liberation Army has not yet talked about the number of casualties it suffered during the cross-border clash, the worst in 45 years.

Mr Srivastava said Indian troops are fully familiar with the alignment of the LAC in all sectors of the India-China border areas, including in the Galwan Valley.

"They abide by it scrupulously here, as they do elsewhere. The Indian side has never undertaken any actions across the LAC. In fact, they have been patrolling this area for a long time without any incident," he said.

Mr Srivastava said the Chinese side attempted to transgress the LAC in other areas of the western sector of the India-China border areas since mid-May.

"These attempts were invariably met with an appropriate response from us," he said.

Mr Srivastava said India expects that Chinese side will sincerely follow the understanding reached between the foreign ministers of two countries recently to ensure peace and tranquillity in the border areas.

@silent_poison Hi...I thought you told me Modi and his foreign ministry are now on the same page. Modi had "clarified" the situation with his statement yesterday right?

So, I shall ask again, in light of this new contradiction. Did Indian soldiers cross the LAC on 15th June resulting in the deaths of over 20 of them? Or did this engagement occur in territory India regards as its own?

Modi has thrown Indian Military and Indian foreign ministry under the bus to make himself look good but these blind Modi bhakts will keep defending their teflon coated leader.

India is doomed. I heard India's constitution prohibits any compromise in territory. Which means India will face China's military pressure for ever. It would be an endless nightmare for India. There would never be an agreement between the two countries on the territory disputes unless China accepts all India's requests. Which is not only impossible, also doesn't fit for any agreement or discussion.
China has signed territory agreements with many of its neighbours. I didn't see India has done that with any of its neighbour.

"Never give up one inch land"-----It sounds very encouraging and brave. In fact this rigid policy is very stupid. It shows the founding father of India lacks far sighted political wisdom.

Most of Galwan valley does belong to Chinese side of LAC but not the entire valley:
See here:

They are on same page now.
Indian soldiers succesfully stopped a Chinese intrusion attempt in Indian side of Galwan on 15 June which is what led to clash and now there is no Chinese intrusion in Galwan.

Don't worry. They'll find a way to justify it. indians always do. There was an india here about a week ago who claimed that it was indians who made america into a superpower and invented the internet.

The resilience and mental gymnastics indians can perform to justify ANYTHING in the universe can NEVER EVER be underestimated.
