In the rest of the world, Pakistan was seen as the defender, and India as the aggressor. I know, I was in Canada at the time. All the news said was how India was acting stupid and aggressive, and how Pakistan had no choice but to act to keep the balance between the two.How does releasing him back to India as a hero benefit Pakistan or Kashmiris or Indian Muslims?
It actually helped the career of Modi who could say in his own country that he made Pakistan release a prisoner without having to give anything back in return.
Releasing him acted as a diplomatic victory to show how Modi only acted out of self-interest, while Pakistan was merely defending itself.
That was when the global view on modi went from a prudent businessman, to a dangerous Hitler inspired Hindutva Prime Minister, willing to start an unwinnable (potentially nuclear) war, just to win elections.
