As per national population figures, 54% of India's population practices open defecation against China's 4%.

The national figures do push up numbers in smaller and poor countries. Like Indonesia has 26% of its population practicing open defecation as against its contribution of only 5% to the world population. The national figure stands at 60% for Ethiopia, 28% for Pakistan and 50% for Nepal.

Neighbouring Sri Lanka, in contrast, has only 1% of its citizens going to toilet in the open.

We can learn a thing or two from Sri Lanka.

Its an awareness issue. In my village the govt pays to build toilets, but many communities consider it unclean (to have a toilet in the house) and do not want to use it.

The scatalogical obsession is an issue in the region too, it seems.

A slum free India........ not atleast in this century may be in next century.

Why not?
We lifted approx 60 million people from Slums last decade.

Currently 28.1% of urban population lives in the slums .

So do the math.

It's on-topic. We're talking about sanitation in general and for comparison purposes, King brought this useful article which has the sanitation data for so many countries.
