London: India has dropped two places on a global press freedom index to be ranked 142nd out of 180 countries in the annual Reporters Without Borders analysis released on Tuesday.

'The World Press Freedom Index 2020' said that with no murders of journalists in India in 2019, as against six in 2018, the security situation for the country's media might seem, on the face of it, to have improved.

"However, there have been constant press freedom violations, including police violence against journalists, ambushes by political activists, and reprisals instigated by criminal groups or corrupt local officials," it said.

Paris-based Reporters Sans Frontieres (RSF), or Reporters Without Borders, is a non-profit organisation that works to document and combat attacks on journalists around the world.

South Asia in general features poorly on the index, with Pakistan dropping three places to 145, and Bangladesh dropping one place to 151.

Norway is ranked first in the Index for the fourth year running. China at 177th position is just three places above North Korea, which is at 180th.

Westerners see India as a super star but in reality it never shined. They see China as a meteor but in reality it never fell.

Not much gap in India & China. World can not expect much press freedom in China because of Communism but what about the shining Maha bharat? The so called world's largest democracy? What a joke

What does Godi Media means? It's a popular term these days within the protesting Indian community

But can you tell us, why is Pakistan even 3 spots below India, since you have your perfect government ?

We must be something right, since even now, we are better than you.

Must be referring to the media goons like Arnab Goooswami

The RSS fake news factories and subsequent harassment of international and local press is a continued policy of many successive Indian governments.

With over 16 major independence movements in India, it is nothing short of a miracle that the word does not get out of the Indian jungle

Wait what? I thought we had a dictatorship in the form of democracy. Don't your media scream day & night that Pak Army controls Pakistan.

I am sure Israel would be a shining example when it comes to press freedom.

We have some problems like the recent journalist killing in Sindh. That is a governance issue and not an issue of imposed nationalism through fascist indoctrination.
At least you acknowledged that there is some problem. I appreciated that. So the moral is instead of looking at others' drawbacks, we should concenteate on our own and try to solve them. It is applied for everyone.
