India prepares for a 'drastic reduction' of Iranian oil imports in a push by the US to cut trade ties, Reuters reports.

India's oil ministry has asked refiners to prepare for a 'drastic reduction or zero' imports of Iranian oil from November, two industry sources said, the first sign that New Delhi is responding to a push by the United States to cut trade ties with Iran, Reuters news agency reports.

India has said it does not recognise unilateral restrictions imposed by the US, and instead follows UN sanctions. But the industry sources said India, the biggest buyer of Iranian oil after China, will be forced to take action to protect its exposure to the US financial system.

India's oil ministry held a meeting with refiners on Thursday, urging them to scout for alternatives to Iranian oil, the sources said.

"[India] has asked refiners to be prepared for any eventuality, since the situation is still evolving. There could be drastic reduction or there could be no import at all," said one of the sources, who has knowledge of the matter.

Indian oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan told reporters in Mumbai that the country would attend to its interests while deciding on oil imports.

"We know [that] to have a healthy energy mix, we can get oil from anywhere. The rest depends on geopolitics, and those decisions will be taken based on the situations," he said. "We will go by our interests. When we decide anything on Iran, we will inform you."

During the previous round of sanctions, India was one of the few countries that continued to buy Iranian oil, although it had to reduce imports as shipping, insurance and banking channels were choked due to the European and US sanctions.

The source said this time the situation is different.

"You have India, China and Europe on one side, and US on the other... At this moment we really don't know what to do, but at the same time we have to prepare ourselves to face any eventuality," said the source.

While a State Department official has said that Washington wants Iranian oil buyers to halt imports from November, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to lessen dependence on Iranian oil.

Haley, currently in Delhi, spoke with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo early on Wednesday, before meeting Modi.

The US push to curb countries' imports of Iranian oil comes after US President Donald Trump withdrew from a 2015 deal between Iran and six world powers and ordered a reimposition of sanctions on Tehran.

Some sanctions take effect after a 90-day "wind-down" period ending on August 6, and the rest, notably in the petroleum sector, following a 180-day "wind-down period" ending on November 4.

. . .
It is no more India choice it is an order from Trump.

You can do your propaganda as much as you like. India and Iran have deeper ties than you make it out to be.
But sure kudos to your Pro Iran and Pro Qatar propaganda.

.
you told me that you will start a thread "india's false mumbai attack 2008,proved by eliyas davidson in his book 'the betrayal of india'..
I asked 24 hours from you let me do my research bro. I will do it.

But will build the famous, epic, Chah Port that will link India with Mars and everythig in between. Right now Modi, Netanyu, Trump are discussing what size of investment they should make in Iran to break Pakistan's monopoly in trade to Afghanistan.

Iranian leader Hassan Rouhani openly conveyed his pleasure at India, Israel, US investing in Iranian port infrastructure.

@Ganga Chah fanboys !

. .
Finally India is taking bold steps and doing propaganda via media usually Iran do that and later we agreed to Iranian terms. So now its upto Iran to make final decision.

. . .
Its not abandoning it, its the taliban-U.S nexus that will degrade its viability

Chahbahar was never viable. Its not the size it should be. Its not the depth it should be. All in all its basically a propaganda a hype rather than anything else.

India basically thought that it could have the cake and eat it too. Sadly greed is a mortal sin for man.

. . .
I have been saying this ever since the Indian's began singing the "Chah" songs and sectarian lobby in Pakistan who used this as examply of Iranian infamy. The fact is India has as matter of national policy and priority moved to get snug with USA. In doing so it has harvested huge benefits as this has been a win win for both US and India. The latter has gotten huge markey access in particular Indian IT industry has taken off and US has gained a strategic bulwark against rising China.

This process could never go very far without first India consummating it's relationship with Israel. India has done as today Modi and Netanayu are two peas in the pod. This has lubricated Indian access to halls of power in USA. Therefore we have today a trioka - India, Israel, USA.

Now Israel is hellbent on taking on Israel and in case of tail wagging the dog it has gotten US through Trump to do it's bidding by barking in sync with Tel Aviv against Iran. Now it requires no Einstien to see that India finds itself in a difficult position. Does it follow USA/Israel or does it go with Iran. And the middle ground has shrunk under Trump's incessant tirades against Iran. Thus Chahg Bahar port will not be abandoned but it will never become a reality unless -

  • India dumps Israel/USA for Iran
  • USA/Israel make peace with Iran
Until then let's al;l just sing "Chah, Chah, Chah songs" ............................................. !
