Power outage despite surplus

Residents of the city and its suburbs are being forced to suffer power cuts for hours at the height of summer despite Bengal being a power surplus state.

The reasons: snags and maintenance. CESC, which maintains 25 lakh-plus connections in Calcutta and Howrah, and the state power distribution utility, which serves parts of the fringes, have not had to resort to load-shedding despite a surge in electricity demand this summer, but needed to switch off power in several areas to repair faults and for routine upkeep. Load-shedding occurs when power demand outstrips supply.

The areas that have suffered power outages include Kankurgachhi, Maniktala, Bagbazar, Jorasanko, Alipore, Bhowanipore and Kidderpore.

“If there’s no power shortage, why have we been without electricity for three to four hours daily on four days out of seven in this unbearable weather?” asked Kankurgachhi resident Priyam Ganguly.

A CESC spokesperson claimed the glitches had been “few and far between”. “Glitches and local faults may have caused outages in some areas. Whenever such problems have been reported, we have rushed to restore normality.”

Houses around VIP Road are going without power for hours for more than a week.

“I missed the last six overs of the KKR vs the Delhi Daredevils match and the tie-breaker of the Champions League final because of power cuts,” said Jadavpur University student Shiladitya Banerjee, a resident of VIP Enclave near Baguiati.

Keshtopur residents complained of power cuts from around 2am till early morning for several days. “On an average, we have gone without power four hours daily,” said a resident.

A state power utility official blamed the outages on the damage to a 33KV feeder line at Bagjola while a road was being “dug up for maintenance”. He could not say how long it would take to rectify the fault.

Senior officials blamed the regular snags on persistently high demand for powe

As the news suggests, some areas have faced issue due to maintenance. It is difference from power shortage where everybody has to face cut for few hours to account for shortfall.

Our telephone line is not working for last 15 days( the whole neighbourhood) due to some digging and maintenance going on.(in India). Cant blame anybody for that.

Man come to Bangladesh you will understand what power shortage is,,lol , at least last few days it's been good weather with coming of rainy season.

Are you Tamilian??...How about other cities. Last I heard TN had 8 hour powercut.

I know about Coimbatore because a friend lives there, I dont think there are 8 hour power cuts anywhere in TN.

I think Coimbatore had a problem because it borders Kerala and there were some issues due to power distribution from Salem.
