India postpones Teesta water sharing deal

Time is really not on Bangladesh's side regarding this matter.

The problem in Bangladesh is the sheer lack of consensus. Generally speaking, the more consensus a nation has, the greater its negotiating power. Sadly, this is what is lacking in Bangladesh.

@ " Dhood tu abi khatam ho gia hai, dhai shal se majesee hamare dhood perahe hai, suraf pani rah giya hai o bhi Mamata jee dena nahi chahte hai ????"

As I said lets just wait till tomorrow. Mamata Banerjee is probably just blackmailing the central government for something.

Am sure the deal will go through.

I just saw the Newshour on Times now where this very incident was analysed. It appears that Mamta is in no way against the proposed Teesta water sharing agreement. She confirmed the same to an emissary of the Bangladesh PM who had visited her a few hours ago. It appears that the Central Government did not disclose the full details of the agreements that the PM wanted to finalise with his Bangladeshi counterpart and only at the last minute, was she faxed the details of the Teesta agreement. Water sharing of the Teesta being a trilateral issue between the GOI, West Bengal and the govt of Bangladesh, it appears that the govt of WB was deliberately kept out of the loop. This is her way of protesting. This is her way of telling the GOI that this is no way to treat West Bengal, especially on a subject which is totally federal in nature. Especially when her party forms an important part of the ruling coalition. A senior journalist of the Anandabazar Patrika was explaining her view point and I must say that I am convinced by the reasoning. This case reeks of mishandling. It was left to bureaucrats who conducted their business in their usual ham handed fashion resulting in our PM with egg on his face.

Now-a-days we saw in the Calcutta Bengalee Channels specially in the last Eid holidays it was written, "Khoshir Eid". Moreso, the Bengalee spelling of "Eid" was wrong. These are all "Dhong" !!!!!

"Khoshir Eid" (should be 'Khushir Eid') translates into 'Joyous Eid'. Can anybody clarify what is objectionable about the term. Isn't Eid joyous? Beats me.

As with spelling mistake of 'Eid', well, grow up.

It appears that the draft had provision for supplying BD with 25,000 cu.sec of water during dry season, but the final draft increased this amount to 33,000 cu.sec without discussing with Mamata.

I think Mamata is actually right, this time around.

Mamata may well be right but surely there was a better way of conveying her point without unnecessarily embarrassing the PM just before he undertakes a supposedly "breakthrough" trip.

Unfortunately, we seem to have no adults to be found anywhere.

Don't you think Mamataji is just pulling a political stunt here? Pashchim Banga forumers can tell us more. She already knows it's just a temporary deal and could simply come along to negotiate the terms directly with GoB.

It's a 15 years deal. Thousands of farmers in north bengal are dependent on tista, water is a sensitive issue for them, its another show of incompetency of upa to change the final draft in last minute keeping the state in dark. good relation with neighbor is needed of course, but not at the expanse of our farmers livelihood!

I don't think Mamata had any other option left. The government's mismanagement had pushed her against a wall and the only way out was by screeching and screaming, not silently crawling. Mamata, as it is, is not the kind of politician who likes to crawl. The government should have taken her aboard and allayed her fear about political fallout from this agreement, a lot earlier than to leave it to the last minute.

But yes, there is always more than one way of doing things and to the one proposing, his way is always better than the rest.

no point repeating the padma water sharing deal..
better be without a deal ..
as it won't give a excuse to be opposed..

Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh said just now

" there will be no transit deal without Teesta water sharing deal "

@ Manmohan Singh should go back to India with empty hand. Cheers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmm so you dont care about the water deal?

Btw its obvious Bangladesh will get they water deal, but India is trying to use it as a bargaining chip to get a better deal from you guys.

Another UPA fcuk up. That seems to be the foreign policy of India with this government in charge. Making monkeys of Indians with our neighbours. Because one state and the union government couldn't get their communications in line, it inconveniences a friendly neighbour.
