India PM calls Pakistan 'epicentre of terrorism'
Updated at: 2006 PST, Thursday, December 11, 2008
NEW DELHI: India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday called Pakistan "the epicentre of terrorism" and said the international community must deal with the problem.

"We have to galvanise the international community to deal with the epicentre of terrorism, which is located in Pakistan," Singh said in a speech to parliament.

The prime minister said India had exercised "the utmost restraint so far" but added that should not be "misconstrued" as a sign of weakness.

He said India "cannot be satisfied with mere assurances on an end to terror emanating from Pakistan."

"We have noted the reported steps taken by Pakistan but clearly much more needs to be done," he said.

"The infrastructure of terrorism" in Pakistan must be dismantled, he said.

Singh's statements capped a day of speeches by Indian political leaders expressing outrage over the carnage in Mumbai that left 172 people dead, including nine gunmen.

The Indian politicians demanded strong action by Pakistan to crack down on militants operating on its soil.

Acknowledging security lapses, Singh said he apologised "to the people of the country that the dastardly act in Mumbai could not be prevented."

"We have identified gaps in the security system, there is a need to equip the security personnel to meet the unprecedented threat to the unity and integrity of the country," he said.

He urged the country to "stand firm and as one people" against the challenge posed by militants.

We shouldnt expect anything less then that and specially after the kind of shitty response that we just gave it. And its not going to stop here, just wait and see.

What's wrong in that? The statistics speak for themselves. Pakistan in indeed the epicenter of the War on Terror.

If it was in fact epic center of terrorism you would not be sitting peacefully in India...

It is something that is well known all over the world.

Even Musharraf said that every terror attack has some Pakistani footprint.

I agree with Flintlock. We most certainly have extremist elements in our society. We should get rid of them, partly we are getting rid of them by having numerous of our soldiers dying in the western borders fighting the war for the Americans. However, I do not see an end to it as the US will be increasing its presence in Afghanistan which will lead to more clashes.

HOWEVER, the Indian PM and the entire lot is also severely disillusioned into believing that they do not have any problems which could lead to the Mumbai Mow Down. Indian Army occupancy of Kashmir will continue to produce such incidents in the future. Burning of Christian Missionaries with their kids, killing of Muslims, prejudiced caste system within the Hindu religion itself etc etc will eventually produce more fodder for future internal fires in India. Indian politicians smell worse in both local and global politics as a fungus ridden shoe & carry similar credibility!

STATISTICALLY speaking India is now the most dangerous country after Iraq and Afghanistan! Strange how these statistics change for the better sometimes.

Forgot to add.

Terror EPICENTERS never remain constant. Spain, Israel, Lebanon, Libya, Iran and now Pakistan. What the Indians should now really be concerned about is the likely start of suicide bombings and/ or car bombings in their own backyard. Keep fooling yourself to beilive that Pakistan is your main problem and pretty soon you will have your own population prove otherwise! Inshallah!

The Indians keep yappin about how they don't want to affect the common Pakistani but yet promote notions such as these whereby the common Pakistani would lose business.

What a rotten bastard.

Or a pressure tactic so the government doesn't just give statements, but actually does something about it to protect it's own people as well as other affected countries

Unfortunately Pakistan is, and has been for some time now, one of the world's epicenters of Sunni islamist terrorism, and the Indian PM's sentiments are by no means original or ground breaking. He's merely repeating the findings of many others who have researched this matter in detail for years on end. He is also correct in stating that this is a problem that has to be tackled by the entire world collectively and not through ad-hoc unilateral measures.

It is highly unlikely that anyone actually wants to constructively debate this important topic, so please excuse the interruption and carry on with the ad hominem attacks and insults.

Really? When he starts to cause people to die of hunger in Pakistan we stop feeling sad about incidents like Mumbai.

I think this would be surprising if it ever happens. There are certain problem when you have the kind of diversity that you have in India, but as one of the positives out there - it provides a perfect thriving ground for moderation "enmasse", a sense of well being & togetherness irrespective of the caste or religion you belong to.

People do business together, they live alongside, they have common bonds, everything EXCEPT their religious fundamentals runs smoothly and fosters a big sub conscious thought in their minds, that WE are similar, and WE can exist together and peacefully. That is one of the biggest achievements you get out of it, and unfortunately you will not know what it is unless you live it yourself.

Being huge and complex also churns out radicals and fundamentals - who are powerful and have nothing else to do but spread the kind of things that you see happening in India, but to turn the country into the likes of Pakistan is extremely unlikely because of the moderation that prevails in the masses of India. I do not expect you to foresee that being in a country based on one religion, so thought to give you some insights..

Actually, Energon, I find the ad hominem attacks and insults most entertaining. Please don't interrupt!
