It seems India had enough on Quality issues plaguing its AL-31F turbofan engines used to power India’s front line Sukhoi-30MKI Fighter jets and is currently working with French Safran aircraft engine manufacturer to develop a higher thrust engine jointly based on the current Kaveri engine.

According to a report prepared by ” The Print “, India is currently holding confidential talks with the French company to explore the possibility to develop a 125kN thrust Class engine to replace current 123 kN Thrust Class AL-31FP turbofan engines developed by Salyut-HAL. According to the report, Kaveri engine derivative once in production will be replaced under ” Super-30″ Program.

GTRE-SAFRAN are already jointly working together to fix issues pertaining to India’s long delayed Kaveri-engine program. Under Kaveri revival program, French have agreed to fix all issues with Kaveri engine and make it production ready by end of 2018 as part of offset obligation under Dassault Rafale fighter jet deal with India.

It is unlikely India can use same engine core to develop a 125kN thrust class engine and will be completely new design and if cleared will take nearly 7 years before it can be ready to be tested on India’s Sukhoi-30MKI.

Under ” Super-30″ Program, Russian companies had offered India it advance 142 kN thrust class AL-41F1S (117S) turbofan engines used in Su-35 to replace current AL-31F turbofan engines due to repeated issues with the engine but India had denied the offer.

If Advance 123 kN Thrust class Kaveri turbofan engines are ever developed then it is also likely that same engine might be used on India’s 5th Generation AMCA fighter jet program which has engine requirement for 110kN thrust Class.
some one should check the mental health of OP writer !

If it could power LCA that will be great, replacing the sukhoi engine is far fetched outlandish idea.

Fake news. Kaveri never designed to be a 125 kn+ power engine. MKI need much more powerful engine. Kaveri can power Mig 29.

Yeas,it could be. You need to start from scratch to achieve that much of thrust,a new engine devolopment program.

Is this another indigenous engine designed by the French for the indians.

Bro it will be new engine if u read the article it's clearly mentioned

Designing an engine from scratch isn't a child's play,it will take years of hardwork and money. Then clubbing that with aircraft will take again required research. It's not a wise decision if they are planning for mki. Situation is different if we are designing it is for our future aircrafts.

India should be happy if Kaveri could power Tejas and AMCA.
Maybe Kaveri can change its size automatically?

Just joking, don't take it serious.

Well, Try Searching posts by someone called "parikrama".
The Rafale Deal was Not only about Rafales, It was far far beyond that.

Of course Safran is providing consulting help to make Kaveri engine air worthy as an offset of RAFALE deal but that does mean it would replace engines in SU-30s, MIG-29s or RAFALEs. The target has always been to have an indigenous engine for the indigenous fighter programs like Tejas and AMCA.

Apart from the initial consultancy fees, India may not need to spend on development as the French side has proposed to make the Kaveri flight-worthy within 18 months for integration into the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft by 2020.
NEW DELHI: India’s quest to develop its own fighter jet engine got a leg up after a $2-million consultancy agreement was finalised with leading French defence manufacturer Safran to help revive the Kaveri project.

The project stalled in 2014 after the Kaveri gas turbine engine developed for combat planes and unmanned aircraft was unable to provide the required power thrust — a fact French experts expect to correct after study.

Initial assessments by the French company show that 25-30% more work is needed for the Kaveri engine to be combat-worthy.

A detailed joint development plan will be drawn up that could use offset credits — the obligation is 50% of contract cost, which translates to over 3 billion euros — coming from the Rafale fighter jet deal.

As reported by ET in July, France has offered a 1-billion euro investment to revive the project. Several rounds of discussions have already taken placesince January between Safran, which has developed the M88 engines for Rafale, and Indian developers.

Apart from the initial consultancy fees, India may not need to spend on development as the French side has proposed to make the Kaveri flight-worthy within 18 months for integration into the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft by 2020.

The Indian Air Force is committed to buying at least 80 of the LCA Mk 1A fighters that will meet higher technical requirements than the version inducted this year.

The aircraft is currently powered by American GE 404 engines that faced a procurement delay after the nuclear tests in 1998, causing a setback to the Tejas programme. A joint working group on jet engine technology has also been formed with the US under the Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI).
