The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) says it is ready to launch its first “ mission aimed at studying distant celestial objects.”

Dubbed “ASTROSAT”, the craft packs four X-ray instruments, an ultraviolet telescope and a charge particle monitor.ISRO says all payloads have been integrated into the satellite and that a few months testing are all that stands between it and a launch atop a rocket designated PSLV C-34. That vessel will ascend to an altitude of about 650km and despatch ASTROSAT into “a near equatorial orbit around the Earth.”

India’s press likes to describe ASTROSAT as a “mini Hubble”, a decent description as the observatory will pack a 300mm mirror compared to Hubble’s 2.4m kit. But ASTROSAT has Hubble beat in some ways as its instruments will observe ultraviolet rays, x-rays and light visible to our puny human eyes in ways and in spectra that Hubble cannot.

ASTROSAT is expected to last give years, rather less than Hubble’s 25-and-counting, but is nonetheless a welcome addition to humanity’s space-spotting fleet. And also rather exciting for boffins at the University of Leicester which provided the CCD camera for the soft X-ray telescope.

Apart from Hubble and Chandra X ray observatory are there any Space telescope?

If done, I guess India will be the only country apart from US to have space based telescope.

Actually lot of space telescopes are launched to space.all most all UV,X ray telescopes are space based one.But none of them are celebrated as Hubble space telescope.The less known Kepler mission which is responsible for finding thousands of exoplanets deserve a honourable mention.

Hi apart from Chandra and Hubble there's the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescopes....!!



Spitzer was credited for the discovery of extrasolar planets called "Hot Jupiters" namely the HD-209458b in 2005.!!

In 2004, it discovered a bright spot in L-1014 in the middle of a Dark Nebula in the Cygnus Constellation..!!
It also discovered the Helix Nebula ( Sauron's Eye) in the Constellation Aquarius.
In March 2006 it gave significant evidence of the presence of a Supermassive Blackhole near the centre of the Milky Way Galaxy - about 25000 ly away from earth..!!

And in 2009, it studied particles it collected from the comet Wild-2 and made a sensational discovery as to how silicate particles were formed in frozen comets when they need high temperatures to form.!!

pretty phenomenal..!! :)

India would do well if it plans to study deep space objects.!

Hi then there's the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope which was launched in 2008.

It made some amazing discoveries while studying Pulsars,Neutron Stars,Blazars along with Gamma-Ray background radiation,Micro Black Holes and Dark Matter as well.!!

Some of its achievements are :-

1) Discovery of Vela Pulsar :-

The first major discovery came when the
space telescope detected a pulsar in the CTA
1 supernova remnant that appeared to emit
radiation in the gamma ray bands only, a first
for its kind.This new pulsar sweeps the
Earth every 316.86 milliseconds and is about
4,600 light years away

2) Greatest Gamma-Ray Burst Release :-

In September 2008, the gamma-ray burst GRB
080916C in the constellation Carina was
recorded by the Fermi telescope. This burst is
notable as having “the largest apparent
energy release yet measured”.The
explosion had the power of about 9,000
ordinary supernovae, and the relativistic jet of
material ejected in the blast must have moved
at a minimum of 99.9999% the speed of light .
Overall, GRB 080916C had "the greatest total
energy, the fastest motions, and the highest-
energy initial emissions" ever seen.

3) Background Gamma Ray Sources

Slowly and steadily India is moving ahead in space journey. ISRO is one institute which makes India proud.

DRDO has done much better job than ISRO. Most of ISRO's "key" components are imported. DRDO suffers sanctions and has developed key stuff inhouse.

Secondly, DRDO works on 1400 types of sciences. ISRO works on only 20 to 30 areas. But ISRO's funding is laughably high. ISRO is wasting lot of money, for fulfiling needs of foreign nations.

Instead, divert that money to DRDO.
