India Plans Military Supplies To Bangladesh Under Proposed Defence Cooperation Framework

India is planning to sign new defense cooperation pact to bolster its military supplies and technology transfer to Bangladesh during defense Minister Manohar Parrikar's visit to Dhaka later this month.

Also the plans to upgrade military training, joint exercises as well as closer cooperation in counter-terrorism will be discussed under the defense cooperation framework during the defense Minister's visit, the Times Of India reported Last Week.

However, "It is likely to be inked when Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina visits India in December. The Parrikar's visit comes in the wake of Bangladesh receiving first-ever submarines from China on Monday.

The two diesel-electric submarines, handed over to Bangladesh Navy chief Admiral Mohammad Nizamuddin Ahmed at the Dalian seaport of Liaoning province in China, indicates the extensive military ties being forged between Dhaka and Beijing.

In mid-October, Chinese president Xi Jinping signed 27 deals worth $25 billion with Bangladesh. India is also trying to counter China's inroads into its neighbourhood, ranging from Sri Lanka, Maldives, Seychelles and Mauritius to Bangladesh, Myanmar and Nepal.

Apart from supplying air defence guns, radars and mine-protected vehicles to Sri Lanka, for instance, India is also constructing two naval offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) for the island nation now.

"Similarly, India can supply OPVs to Bangladesh through innovative financing mechanisms. The training of Bangladeshi personnel in Indian military establishments will also be increased under the overall capacity-building," he said.

The sixth edition of the India-Bangladesh joint military exercise "Sampriti" is also currently underway at Tangail in Dhaka.

"With the focus being on counter-terrorism, the exercise will boost interoperability between the two armies.

Regular naval and air force exercises will also be on the agenda now," an official at Indian MoD said.

BD builds its own OPV. India has nothing that BD requires that it can not get from the elsewhere.

I am not sure what technology he was talking about. I dont think Russia will agree to transfer Bhrahmos without a slice in their plate. Anything else worthwhile? We can ask few Arjun tank which are quite heavy and can melt them to convert to railway track?

Brahmos won't be sold to us as we would be pointing them at them. Plus why would be deal with the monkey India and not go the Russia the organ grinder directly.

I don't envy the Indian minister.... comes empty handed knowing full well BD side probably viewing him with pitiful disdain for wasting their time. I wonder how BD side kept a straight face.

But I only see India spreading its legs for Bangladesh due to fear of Chinese "inroads".

Military training, joint exercise, counter-terrorism etc. are normal activities. If they mean 'boosting military relationship' as raising the no. of Sampritis to 2-3 per year for instance, then ya whatever. And as I earlier mentioned in another thread, they will likely be normal troops/infantry units taking parts. Our strategic forces such as Commandos/SWADS are trained in much better places and wont be even near Sampritis.

Few Arjuns? Ya well, again whatever. They are comparatively heavy tanks and are not compatible with our terrain. Even if BD ends up getting some, not a game changer. I wont mind increasing our tank inventory.

Finally, we have our indigenous ship building going on at full pace and with ToTs from China. I dont see why Navy will buy Indian OPVs. But Hasina is a shrewd lady. She'll probably milk out this offer from India and dump it to the Coast Guards. Happy-shappy everyone.

If BD would have been surrounded by China on 3 sides then there wouldn't be a BD to begin with ....

If the Bangladeshis are competent enough then it will be a boon for BD both in terms of economics and it's position in South Asia

Hmm, im quite interested to see what kind of tech india wants to transfer. Since this is pact is a first of its kind, they will probably start with something small, like firearms. I dont really see bangladesh buying much from india, apart from a token purchase. The military is not so enthusiastic about buying from india. Furthermore, except for choppers, most of the types of weapons exported by india can be made in bangladesh.

This upgrade in relation will only be a symbolic gesture unless advanced tech is offered to us. In that case, quite a few strings will be attached to it.
