DAWN.COM | World | Soldiers fire on Kashmiri protesters; one killed

SRINAGAR: Indian troops fired on hundreds of demonstrators who tried to torch a paramilitary bunker in Kashmir on Sunday, killing one person and wounding at least five, police said. More were injured in subsequent clashes.

Hundreds of people took to the streets of Srinagar, the summer capital of India’s Jammu and Kashmir state, in an angry protest against the death of a 25-year-old who died a day earlier after being beaten by soldiers in a demonstration last week.

The protesters threw rocks at security forces and surrounded an armored vehicle belonging to paramilitary soldiers, according to footage from AP Television News.

They later tried to light a bunker on fire, said Farooq Ahmed, a top police officer. A spokesman for the paramilitary force said they fired in self-defence.

“We exercised maximum restraint. Our soldiers opened fire only in self-defence after the protesters tried to torch the bunker,” said Prabhakar Tripathi, spokesman for the Central Reserve Police Force.

One person was killed and at least five wounded, said Ahmed.

The demonstration swelled after the shots were fired, when hundreds more people poured into the streets, chanting, “We want freedom” and “Indian forces leave Kashmir.”

New clashes erupted as police and paramilitary soldiers fired warning shots and tear gas to quell the spiraling protests.

At least six protesters and five soldiers were injured, Ahmed said.

“The situation has been brought under control and restrictions on assembly of more than five people have been imposed in some parts of Srinagar,” he said.

Anti-India sentiment runs deep in Muslim-majority Kashmir, which is divided between India and Pakistan and is claimed by both. Militant groups have fought since 1989 for the Himalayan region’s independence from India or its merger with neighboring Pakistan.

More than 68,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the conflict.

Meanwhile, two army porters were shot dead and two soldiers wounded Sunday in Indian Kashmir by gunfire from Pakistan’s side of the divided Himalayan region, India’s army said.

The shooting was directed at an army post in Machil sector, 180 kilometers north of Srinagar, army spokesman Col. Vineet Sood said.

Pakistan violates ceasefire, two Kashmiri civilians killed

Sunday, June 20, 2010 6:58:59 PM by IANS

P. Chidambaram Srinagar/New Delhi, June 20 (IANS) Two civilian porters were killed and two Indian soldiers injured Sunday in unprovoked firing by Pakistani troopers near Jammu and Kashmir’s Machil border sector, violating the seven-year-old ceasefire, officials said.
“There was firing from the Pakistani side between 7 and 8 in the morning. Two porters were killed,” an official in the Army Headquarters said in New Delhi.

The official said the two porters had gone to fetch water from a riverside when they were spotted by Pakistani troopers from across the Line of Control (LoC) - the de facto border that divides Jammu and Kashmir between the two bitter neighbours.

“They shot them dead. It was a clear violation of the ceasefire,” the official said.

Indian Army soldiers retaliated and fired at the Pakistani troopers, he said, adding that two “of our soldiers were injured”.

“We don’t know about the casualties or injuries on the Pakistani side,” he said.

The firing incident on the LoC in north Kashmir’s Machil sector, some 140 km from Srinagar, comes days ahead of Home Minister P. Chidambaram’s visit to Islamabad June 26 for a SAARC home minister’s conference.

Sunday’s was the second violation in a week of a ceasefire agreement on LoC that India and Pakistan signed in November 2003.

India has expressed anguish over increasing infiltration attempts by militants from across the border with Pakistan. New Delhi accuses Islamabad of supporting an armed separatist campaign raging since 1989.

Same goes for you two folds. Present your propaganda and we shall present ours. On a Pakistani Defense Forum, mind you.

Now on a more realistic tone, I will wait for some credible information to come forward before making harsh comments.

.
By credible I mean ISPR. There were no reporters .. it said porters. Or do you want me to form an opinion on Indian media announcements?

.
It is India which is illegally occupying Kashmir - and violated, in fact abrogated the ceasefire when it occupied Siachin Glacier -so until Siachin is vacated the ceasefire has, in effect, ceased to exist!

We feel that it is Pakistan which is illegaly occupying the territory. This clash of mentalities is the real problem.

.
With just the Indian side claiming 'ceasefire violations', there really is no way to check the veracity of the claims.

The only means to verify claims of ceasefire violations by either side would be if UN/international observers were stationed on either side in sufficient numbers.

P.S: All claims and counter claims go in this thread.

Jammu: A Border Security Force (BSF) trooper was killed when Pakistani Rangers opened fire at a forward post of the Indian border guards in Jammu and Kashmir's Akhnoor sector early on Tuesday.

Pakistani Rangers started firing at the Chak Sagwali post in Pargwal area, about 45 km northwest of Jammu, around 6.15 am, officials said.

The gunfire, in violation of the November 2003 ceasefire on the border, hit Sultan Ali, a head constable of the BSF. He was hit by a hail of bullets and died on the spot, according to a BSF official.
