Srinagar: With India and Pakistan busy in building a new era of friendship and cooperation, the Hurriyat Conference (M) has got indications from Pakistani establishment that it was not averse to Hurriyats participation in the coming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Sources privy to the latest thinking in Islamabad said that the Hurriyat would be formally told of about changing perceptions of Pakistan about elections during their amalgam leaders formal visit to that country mostly probably next month. They may do some plain-speaking about hard ground realities during our visit, said one of the amalgam leaders, But I think they (Islamabad) have made up their mind on certain issues including elections.
He however sounded skeptical about the direct participation of the amalgam and said that If our participation in elections is linked with the solution of the basic issue of Kashmir, we need then a public commitment, both, from New Delhi and Islamabad. Only then things can be favourable for us, he said adding it would be suicidal to participate in the elections without any public commitment.
The Hurriyat sources say that even as Pakistan has been reiterating its commitment towards Kashmir issue but virtually they have sidestepped the issue and their main thrust on relations with India is commercial. There is colossal shift in the priorities. They are now talking of allowing investment by interested business establishment, they say, and where do we figure?. We need to do an honest assessment of the situation before issuing statements and calling rhetoric, said one of the amalgam leaders.
Hurriyat sources say that the amalgam leaders would seek a clear-cut advice from the Pakistani leadership during their proposed visit. They say that Pakistan is very keen to see Hurriyat leaders there. We understand that they have something special to say, said a keen source. May be it could be Hurriyats role in future political course of Kashmir, he adds.
The Hurriyat leaders believe that India and Pakistan have an undeclared understanding on freezing Kashmir issue for a certain period of time during which serious Kashmir-specific confidence building measure (CBMs), would be taken to reform and remodel the peoples mood in Kashmir. (Kashmir Monitor was first break the story in its February 21, 2012 issue).
Sources said that New Delhi too has conveyed to some sections in the separatist camp of the changing scenario and have sought them to join electoral politics. They say that some of the leaders have already broken the jinx and they have set on reaching out to the people even in the areas where their influence is minimal. In the coming days there would flurry of activity from certain sections of the separatist camp. You would find leaders holding public rallies, raising grass-root cadres and consolidating their support-base in the areas of their influence, sources say. They say that the mainstream parties NC and PDP too have been signaled of the upcoming scenario.
Pakistans changing position on Kashmir evoked severe criticism from Syed Ali Geelani, the chairman of uncompromising faction of the Hurriyat. Geelani sought an explanation from Pakistan for making a departure from the countrys historical position on Kashmir. Even as Pakistani foreign office promptly tried to explain its countries position but it failed to dispel the impression.
