Govt drops plan to make CNG-run autorickshaw
Indian Hero Honda frustrates Atlas step

FE Report

The government has shelved its plan to manufacture CNG-driven three-wheelers after strong opposition from an Indian automaker, officials said.

State-owned Atlas Bangladesh took the step to make CNG (compressed natural gas) auto rickshaws within the country because of its huge demand in the transport sector.

Hero Honda (an indian company), which supplies its parts to assemble the popular motorcycles in Atlas's plant, formally obstructed the initiative.

The Atlas's board of directors recently decided not to go ahead with the project as it might "sour" relations with the motorcycle maker.

"We've dropped our CNG project," AFM Saifuzzaman, managing director of Atlas Bangladesh, told the FE.

Earlier, industries minister Dilip Barua announced that Bangladeshi company would manufacture CNG three-wheelers.

"We're looking for prospective investors from China and India for the project," he told an annual performance meeting of his ministry.

Atlas chief said it got offers from China and India for the project.

He said: "Hero Honda asked us not to manufacture any CNG three-wheelers in the plant where its vehicles are being assembled."

Atlas, formed in 1966 under private management, is a publicly listed company, which had planned to make 500 units of CNG three-wheelers at the initial stage.

Currently the state enterprise mainly assembles all brands of Hero Honda, grabbing the second position in the country's booming car market.

It also makes limited number of Mishuk, also a three-wheeler.

Uttara Motors, a private group, is the largest importer of CNG-three wheelers in the country.

There is no problem building them in plants not already being used by honda right? Seems like a valid point.

.
CNG is not that bad but it is not safe specially if any one take in to account the hijacking.... but the pressure from bharatis not to go ahed with this project is really disgusting... bd should take help from china in this regard and go ahed with this project..

Plant does not own by indian company but by Bngladesh state owned Atlas corporation. What Atlas can produce in its plant is GOB decision not indian to dictate. But real problem is Awami regime which suservient to india heed to indian dictate and canceled production of CNG vehicle in Bangladesh.

.
for your info. I believe hero honda is a private entity. And its actually a joint venture between hero and honda-so japan govt also involved eigh? Great logic. Why cant atlas just set up another plant to build cng auto's . hero honda might have a genunine concern. Just because you dont its not made public it does not mean you know it all

. .
It all depends on the contract between Hero and Atlas. Beyond that it is politics. So without knowing the terms of the contract it is hard to comment.

.
Hero = India
Honda = Japan
Hero + Honda = India
Japan= ?

Hero hondas founder and chairman is Brijmohan Lal Munjal who is a bharati... n the head quarter is also located in india... so all the major administrative decision comes from india.... it is a pure hegemonic decision by the bharatis... to make sure indian cng continue to flow in bangladesh instead bd makes it by itself... n building another plant is not a easy task like 123... it will completely alter the cost benefit analysis... if atlas has the capacity in their plant bharatis have no right to object about the deal.....

One does not have to read contract to understand what went on.
Atlas corp is majority govt own company and decision right is only with govt of Bangladesh which unfortunately run by Awami regime. This is as simple as that. What Atlas can produce in its factory is not concern of indian company as they dont own Atlas to force a deceision. And no comany in the world can dictate another on what other company can produce in its factory unless they own it. But in case of Atlas, indian company used susurvient Awami regime to force Atlas decision to cancel the CNG production.

What if Atlas got license from Hero-Honda because they have pledged their factories just to make their product. What if making these CNG's would undermine Hero Honda's production. Why would Hero agree to such an arrangement. May be atlas thought loosing Hero- Honda would be huge set back.

I am still not sure if Atlas is a GoB entity. Article says its a private entity which is publicly enlisted. That just means it traded in stock market but not owned by Government. I could be wrong but I hope you at least know the difference.

It seems most of the Bangladeshis are just cry babies.

Wtf...This threads title is highly misleading.:what:
Does GoI responsible for this action or any part of objection came from political decision makers? This kind of title used only for a flame war.So bro pls note before make a comment against whole country.

.
its disgusting.... some bd members dont even rely on their own govt and company.....
looks like their first priority is to bash indians, GOI and indian companies
.

Atlas is not that dumb ... that they would take the initiative of the project if there would have been any clause where it was stated that hero honda would not allow to take any new project in the current factory.... n no company would take new project after creating problem with the existing projects... from this article it is clear bhartis clearly has created this obstacle to make sure indian cng continue to flow in bd and bd does not get the chance to build new cng..

Indian ploys are exposing everyday, very badly. Seems- BD members are more united than before. Very good sign.

How will India act if BD can manufacture many thing by itself by connecting to other countries and reduce importing from India, lol?
