Areva May Sign India Nuclear Contract Early Next Year

By Natalie Obiko Pearson

Oct. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Areva SA, the world’s biggest maker of atomic reactors, and Nuclear Power Corp. of India may sign an agreement early next year to build India’s first large-capacity plant using overseas equipment after a global ban was lifted.

Areva will initially supply the Indian state-run monopoly with two 1,650-megawatt reactors, according to the preliminary agreement between the companies in February. The final accord will be signed after getting French parliamentary and regulatory approvals.

“That won’t hold up progress on the signing of the final contract,” Arthur de Montalembert, chairman and managing director of Areva’s Indian unit, told Bloomberg News in Mumbai today. “We don’t foresee any problem there.”

While the contracts can be signed, work on the project at Jaitapur in the western state of Maharashtra can’t start until the approvals, he said. Areva may also offer Nuclear Power a stake in an African uranium mine to ensure fuel supplies for reactors.

“It would most likely be in Namibia where we have a mine that is set to begin late this year or early next year,” said Montalembert.

Buying shares in Areva’s mines will help boost supplies for locally built atomic plants as domestic reserves of uranium are insufficient for India’s requirements. India plans to increase atomic power generation 14-fold by 2030 following the lifting of a three-decade global ban on nuclear trade with the South Asian nation last year.

India signs nuclear pact with Argentina

New Delhi, Oct 14 (PTI) India and Argentina today signed an agreement in civil nuclear cooperation and nine other pacts with a desire to establish strategic partnership.

The agreements were signed after wide-ranging talks between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Argentine President Cristina Fernando de Kirchner here.

The Agreement for Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy was signed by Vivek Katju, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs and Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Talana.

Argentina became the seventh country with which India has signed a civil nuclear agreement after the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group lifted a 34-year-old ban on nuclear commerce in September last year.

India has already signed similar pacts with the US, France, Russia, Kazakhstan, Namibia and Mongolia.

France To Start Work At Indian State's Nuclear Power Plant

NEW DELHI, Oct 27 (Bernama) -- France on Monday said it is preparing to start work at the proposed 1,650-MW nuclear power plant at Jaitapur in Maharashtra, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

"We have already signed an MoU between NPCIL, Areva and we are preparing for the construction of the civil nuclear plant located in Jaitapur," Foreign Trade Minister of France, Anne Marie Idrac told reporters at a CII event.

French firm Areva would supply the equipment for the nuclear power project to be developed by state-run Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL).

Both India and France have agreed to set up six units of Europea Pressurised Reactors (EPRs) over the next 12 to 15 years, and the total funding needs for setting up 10,000 MW capacity is about at Rs 1,00,000 crore.

NPCIL recently said it has tied up funds for the Jaitapur power project. The project requires an investment part of which would come from external credit assistance (ECA).

The ECA will be from a consortium of five French banks, including BNP Paribas, Societe Generale, HSBC and Calyon.

NPCIL would also borrow from both Indian and French financial institutions.

First of all , i really appreciate a big success of Manmohan to make 123 deal. From past couple of years the India was facing a big problem in energy sector and now if we project for next 15 yrs just because now India can give both cheap energy , infrastructural and cheap labor, its a big big boost to Indian economy in the coming future. Obviously there are some military advantage as well.

I really like the congress to put these intelligent mans to handle the world very well.
