Data coming out of China isnt something to be taken for sure. A country which has banned its people from open internet, doesnot hold elections, barred people from coming in large groups and banned free media, data can easily be manipulated. I have seen what was going on in Chinese media channels, when Modi travelled China, same news again and again in a loop.
But Chinese living in New Delhi told us that the look of India's capital is worse than a China's ordinary county :/

I asked one of my sources who worked on BJP's election campaign in 2014.
He says GST should be passed in this monsoon session. But it's already too late.
The bill should have been passed atleast an year ago to get benefits by 2019, that is before the next election campaign.

Some benefits will be immediate. Like lower prices of many goods (because less double taxation...passing on savings to the consumer). Lower logistics price and efficiency yes will take some time, some of those will be past 2019 like in 2020+ timeframe....but even some of those will be starting in 1 - 2 years time (I think). Combined structural advantages will only be in Modi 2nd term with the further reforms in the pipeline.

Well it will then be a repeat of UPA-I inheriting the economy from NDA in 2004....letting it fly for a few years (you can only stop that momentum if you really really actively try) and then eventually running it into the ground ever so deftly and not so deftly.

If India actually chooses Pappu over Modi, the last little faith I have in India will go.

But I am betting on the direct immediate cost benefits impacting right away provided GST bill passes...especially the rural poor....because they will see a rebate in many goods by avoiding double tax etc.

Just like Bankruptcy bill, the further implementation is what matters most in long term....i.e how Modi govt ramps up the GST rate over time from what it starts to cover what it is replacing. That transition is what your friend is talking about. It wont be so easy for centre BJP given many states are under BJP rule now....and they would want to maintain that too and therefore be cautious...Jayant Sinha was talking about this in terms of state insulation allowed to only gradually come down.

The good news is GST is sometimes quite overrated. The main economic agenda falls outside of GST I still feel....there is much work to be done there (skill/training, education, ease of business, labour law reforms). If Modi govt tackles those much more effectively and continue the prudent fiscal discipline and promote more supply side policies for rural poor (MUDRA, DBT is a very nice start) then there is no reason why Modi popularity rate should not stay where it is (more than 70% or so)....and next elections should be in the bag.

By the time it's coordinated and executed it will be almost 2018, despite majority of the states being ruled by BJP....or so I heard.
But then as they say, let's wait and watch.
